Norwich defeats Greene at home to keep winning streak alive at 7
NORWICH – Norwich coasted to victory over Greene on Tuesday with a 12-2 final, remaining undefeated and at the top of the standings in the Otsenango Pony League.
Greene got things started in the first inning when Kolby Finch singled on a 3-0 count, scoring Liam Flanagan from third on his line drive to center field.
In the second, Norwich responded with six runs on a two-out rally.
Evan Sylstra saw just two pitches before sending a lead-off single to center field. His teammate and next batter Logan Ford hit a hard ground ball to third and was able to reach the base paths due to an error. Two batters later, Blaine Orlando was hit by a pitch to put three runners on for Norwich.
Facing two outs and the bases loaded, Torin Lawerence used his patience at the plate and drew a walk, scoring Sylstra to tie the game at 1-1.
Norwich took the lead when Ford scored on a wild pitch in Tyler Hagen’s at-bat. Hagen then singled on a 3-2 count, scoring Orlando and Lawerence.
Stealing both second and third base, Hagen reached scoring position with his younger brother Mike Hagen standing in the batter’s box. Mike Hagen then sent a hard grounder to the third baseman and was able to reach first while Tyler Hagen scored.
Nearly the same play happened for Mike Hagen as he went around the bases, only stealing second and making it to third on wild pitch. He scored when Nolan Dodzweit sent a line drive to left field, making the score 6-1.
Norwich saw every player in the line-up reach base as Josh Willis picked up a walk as the last batter. Sylstra, batting for the second time of the inning, was struck out after seeing a full-count by Greene’s Finch to end the rally.
Greene scored their second run of the game when Finch once again singled, his second of the game, scoring Dallas Roe from second base. That run was the last Greene was able to muster up in the contest.
Norwich was leading 9-2 at time of Greene’s fifth inning score. The home team was able to tack on another three innings in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game after the 10 run difference.
Lawerence was credited with the victory for Norwich as he went four innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out nine. Willis threw two innings of relief, ringing up four Greene batters. He giving up just one hit.
Finch took the loss for Greene, surrendered five hits and eight runs over two and a third innings, striking out four.
Dodzweit went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s at the plate to lead Norwich’s offense. The Hagen brothers had two hits each, going 2-for 4 for the game. Tyler racked up two RBI’s in the win while Mike added one.
Finch led Greene with two hits in two at-bats while recording two RBIs. Flanagan and Hunter Poland each walked twice in the game as four of the eight walks for Greene batters.
Norwich and Greene are both in action on the diamond Thursday. Greene faces another tough test in as they travel to Unadilla Valley while Norwich is set to host Mount Markham. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
