Chenango farmers get nearly $100,000 to improve operations

CHENANGO COUNTY – Nearly $100,000 in state grants have been earmarked to profit two Chenango County farmers.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced more than $1 million in grants being doled out to new and veteran farmers across New York State to bolster the state’s agricultural industry.

Money is awarded by New York’s New Farmers Grant Fund and Veterans Farmer Grant Fund, which is designed to help farms operated by military veterans.

In Chenango County, Robert Gary Lobdell, a veteran farmer, was awarded $50,000 to build a new livestock barn, renovate an existing barn, purchase equipment, and install fencing to expand his beef operation.

Lilly Farms, LLC in Chenango County is slated for $47,589 from the New Farmers Grant Fund to build and equip a livestock barn and purchase equipment to help expand the farm’s herd.

Both grant funds are administered by Empire State Development, with consultation from the State Department of Ag and Markets.

The state received nearly 60 applications for program funding by farmers who could show how their project expands or diversifies production. The funds provide grants of up to $50,000 to assist with up to 50 percent of eligible project costs, with the remaining 50 percent being matched by the recipient.

Since its launch in 2014, the New Farmers Grant Fund has awarded $3.27 million to nearly 90 farms across the state. This is the first year the Veterans Farmer Grant Fund has been offered.
