Teenagers travel from around the US to help improve Chenango County homes

NEW BERLIN – A non-profit group called Reach Mission Trips brought over 480 volunteers to the Unadilla Valley Central School District hoping to improve the homes of individuals in need throughout Chenango County.

Reach Mission Trips is a not-for-profit group consisting of churches from around the United States, and through fundraisers or individual contribution, volunteers pay over $400 per person to purchase materials and travel to help people in need.

The group is currently being housed by the Unadilla Valley Central School District, and they arrived at the school on July 8 and leave on July 21.

The day after the group arrived, it began its first batch of construction projects for Chenango County residents, building new rooftops, handicap accessible ramps, installing gutters, and painting homes.

All work is being done at no cost to the homeowner, and even though Reach Mission Trips is a primarily christian group, there are no religious requirements to apply for assistance.

“One week of serving others will transform the way a youth group engages their world,” said Reach Mission Trips Director of Marketing Katie Jones.

Jones said the organization works with the best teenagers around, and she’s noticed each teenager that joins wants to make a difference, and use their lives to impact others in a positive way.

“In repairing roofs, building wheelchair ramps, and painting houses, they see that hard work has value, that building relationships with those outside of their normal circle broadens their perspective, and that they can live out their faith in a way that changes the lives of others,” she said.

She said each teenager pays at least $409, and up to $429 depending on when they sign up for the trip.

“The fee is to help cover the cost of travel and pay for the materials needed for each project,” said Jones.

Jones said the Chenango County community has been incredibly welcoming, and she added that she would love to come back to the area again in the future.
