Greene Fire Department awarded $25k federal grant

GREENE – The Greene Fire Department is getting a boost of federal dollars that will help keep volunteers safe during calls.


Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Friday that the department is slated for nearly $25,000 in grant funds through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.


The department says it will use funding to purchase new turnout gear for better protection against hazards and carcinogens that are harmful to the health of its volunteer firefighters.


Greene Fire Chief Rick Woerter said the grant gives firefighters “increased measures of safety and health protection.”
