Preston fire claims home after battle with local fire departments
PRESTON – Four fire departments fought a raging trailer fire for over an hour on Monday night, and a family member of the trailer's owner said the home was a total loss.
According to the City of Norwich's Ontario Hose Company, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday the Norwich Fire Department provided mutual aid to Preston for a reported trailer fire on County Road 19.
"Through the county, Mutual Aid Plan Truck 237 and Tanker 236 both were requested," stated the fire company. "Both units responded and operated on scene for just over an hour before returning."
A family member of the home owner, Alicia Miller said within that hour her brother-in-law Fredrick Donnelly the third had lost his home. Miller said since the fire, she started a go-fund-me page to try and help him afford another place to live.
"As soon as we got there no one knew if Freddy was still inside," said Miller. "The whole experience was terrifying, and it wasn't until we saw him nearby with his dog that we knew he was safe."
Miller said after the family returned to the area on the following morning and found that the trailer's roof had collapsed, with pieces of burnt furniture scattered throughout the area.
"It was a terrible experience, and I don't wish it on anyone," Miller said.
She said the trailer had been in the family for years, and when it burned down it took many of their good family memories with it.
"Freddy is now in-between friend's and family member's homes while we try and get him back on his feet, for those who can donate or share his story, it's incredibly appreciated," she said.

"I also want to thank all of the fire departments for their efforts in fighting the fire, and I'm glad no one got hurt," said Miller.
The Ontario Hose Company stated that the departments operating on scene were Preston Fire Rescue, Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, Pharsalia Fire Department, Official City of Norwich Fire Department and the Chenango County Bureau of Fire.
