Tenney receives award in Sherburne, greeted by supporters and protesters

SHERBURNE – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney visited Lok-n-Logs in Sherburne on Wednesday where she received an award from Job Creators Network naming her a Defender of Small Business.

Tenney was joined by Job Creators Network representative and former Missouri Speaker of the House Tim Jones, Sherburne Mayor Bill Acee, Lok-n-Logs Founder Jim Webb, and a horde of small business owners as she received the award. About 500 feet down the Lok-n-Logs driveway, stationed on Route 12, were about 30 individuals protesting against Tenney.

The stop was part of Job Creators Networks' "Tax Cuts Work" bus tour, covering 40 states.

"We're here to celebrate the Federal Tax Cut and Jobs Act, we're here to celebrate your community, your business leaders," said Jones. "And of course, we are here to celebrate your very fearless Congresswoman Claudia Tenney."

He went on to say one of the best economical policies of the last 30 years was the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, a notion that was echoed by Lok-n-Logs founder Jim Webb.

"It's been a rough time in the last 10 years because the housing meltdown just about destroyed our industry ... When the tax cuts were announced in December, I called my paymaster and said, 'Mike, I want you to double the last week's pay for everybody,'––except for the guys who just came on, I gave them a half a week's pay."

Tenney addressed attendees about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and the importance of small businesses succeeding in New York.

Tenney said, "You don't learn anything until you try to run a business in a poor economy, try to make payroll, try to deal with government regulations and taxes, in probably the most difficult state to do business ... We might be in Sherburne but you're standing among heroes in our community, people who care about their families, are keeping their business going under the regime of a very aggressive – and I'm going to say it, I was in the state assembly for six years – a socialist, corrupt government in Albany."

She continued to say because of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, jobs are being created as well as a sense of vibrancy and dynamism in communities.

"We need to continue to [create jobs], we need to continue to roll back regulations, we need to continue to give New York a fighting chance," said Tenney.

Sherburne Mayor Bill Acee also addressed attendees about the Tax Cuts Act and its effects in Sherburne.

"Its effects are already being felt," said Acee. "These tax cuts will make it easier for families and businesses to thrive and grow in the United States. They are increasing wages and increasing overall employment numbers."

A result of this, Acee said, is young people are out working again and looking for houses. "We had every house under $200,000 sell in Sherburne this summer––unheard of," Acee said.

Jones presented Tenney with an award naming her a defender of small business, in part because of her role in implementing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

Throughout the function, protesters could be heard using megaphones from the road, often chanting, "One-term Tenney."

A release from Citizen Action of NY representative Mary Clark, who was among the protesters, said, "This should be called the 'Trump-Tenney Tax Cuts Work ... for billionaires and big corporations' tour.' If the tax cuts were really benefitting families and small businesses, there would be no need for a glitzy multi-million dollar sales job and bus tour."

It continued, "Families and small business owners would see the results in their paychecks and wouldn’t need convincing. But they’re not. What they’re seeing is a Trump-GOP tax law that will add $2 trillion to the national debt, and that’s being used as an excuse to make deep cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and education. These are critical services that Main Street businesses and their customers depend on to thrive."

"You got to love them," Tenney said, acknowledging the demonstrators. "Actually, I think this is awesome because it shows you what we're up against."
