Athlete of the Week: McKenna Sergi, Greene Trojans Field Hockey

An athlete that can perform under pressure is a player that every coach wants on their team.
At the high school lever it is hard to come by an athlete that can consistently play at a higher level when it comes to a big game.
Learn the name McKenna Sergi, this week’s Athlete of the Week.
Currently a member of the Greene Trojans field hockey team and has served already served as this type player for head coach Christine Battaglini this season, Sergi was first recognized for this attribute last basketball season in one game in particular: the Class C semifinals against Bainbridge-Guilford.
In that game, Sergi came up huge for the Trojans with 13 points, nine of them coming from long-distance.
Her hustle along with the points she scored in that game came when Greene needed them most, stepping into a huge role for the Trojans despite the loss.
This year, on the field hockey turf, Sergi is once again holding true to who she is as an athlete.
She has scored six goals so far this season, including one game with a hat trick, and four assists in seven games played.
Each of one of those goals or assists have come at big moments in the game.
In Greene’s win over Maine-Endwell in the first round of the Nancy Bromley Tournament, hosted by the Trojans, Sergi recorded an assist on the game winning goal in overtime when she found her teammate Olivia Kennedy.
That win set up a rematch against Whitney Point in the finals.
The championship game once again went into overtime due to Sergi scoring her second goal of the contest, ultimately forcing overtime. Unfortunately, the Eagles came out the winners to steal the title from the host Trojans.
“McKenna works best under pressure and is a game changer in close contests,” said Battaglini. “She’s known to be a goal scorer, but every year she has just as many assists as goals come the end of the season which shows how well she can distribute the ball.”
Sergi has been a member of the field hockey team for five years now and is one of the most experienced players for the Trojans. Battaglini states her time on the teams allows her to help her teammates in game situations.
“Her intensity in practices and games brings our extremely talented team to the next level,” said Battaglini.
Sergi, one of the top 50 players in the nation, has committed continue her playing career at the University of Connecticut upon graduation in June.
