Marauders capture third win of season on senior night; Rood records second 200 yard game

SHERBURNE – Labeled as one of the top fives games for the eight-man division in Section III, Sherburne-Earlville took care of business on senior night against Morrisville-Eaton with a 40-6 win.
Prior to the game starting, Head Coach Ed Holmquist honored his nine seniors of the 2018 roster. He and the Marauders quickly turned their focus towards earning their third win of the year.
While Morrisville-Eaton won the opening coin toss, it didn’t take long for Sherburne-Earlville to put the first points on the scoreboard. A high snap between Warriors center and punter on fourth down resulted in a turnover on downs for the Marauders at M-E’s 18 yard line.
Three plays later, Cody Beckwith punched in his first touchdown of the game from five yards out to give S-E an early 6-0 lead.
On their ensuing drive, the Warriors had another bad exchange resulting in another turnover. This time it was between center and quarterback.
In their red zone, the Marauders took over following their opponent’s miscue. S-E was able to move the ball down to the Morrisville-Eaton three yard line but couldn’t put the ball over the goal line, ultimately turning the ball over on downs.
Having the same result as their first two drives on offense, the Warriors coughed up the ball to the Marauders deep in their own territory.
Mike Giglio’s turned the Warriors misfortune into Sherburne-Earlville’s second touchdown of the team, scoring from 12 yards away. The Marauders converted the two-point try to go up 14-0.
That’s how the first half ended as play by both teams stalled until the intermisson.
Out of the break, S-E changed the tone of the game as Keith Rood returned the second-half kickoff to the house, adding to the home team’s lead. He added another two touchdowns in the half – a 31 yarder and his longest run of the game for 62 yards.
Rood recorded 203 yards on the ground, giving him back-to-back games with 200-plus yards. He finished with 11 carries on the night in just his second varsity game ever played.
The Marauders defense allowed Morrisville-Eaton to negative yardage throughout the contest until the the Warriors final drive, where they scored their lone touchdown with 14 second left.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Brandon Howard and Sergio Rapp each wrapped up the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage on three difference occasions. As a team, the Maraduers recorded a total of nine sacks – all by seniors. Beckwith finished with two while teammate Nate Backus added one.
The S-E defense created four turnovers with inceptions by Beckwith and Chyle Foster to go along with the two fumble recoveries by Brandon Howard and Calib Hill in the first half.
Beckwith added 57 yards to Sherburne-Earlville’s offensive total on 16 carries while catching one pass thrown by Taylor Gryzmkowski for 17 yards and the final touchdown of the game.
The Gryzmkowski-Beckwith TD connection was the first of the young quarterback’s varsity career.
The Marauders head to undefeated Weedsport for their final regular season game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday. If Sherburne-Earlville can take down the top team in their division, a three-way tie is possible between the Marauders, Weedsport and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown.
Playoffs for S-E will be determined by this week’s games.
