Lady Tornado splashes Yellowjackets with 113-67 win on senior night

NORWICH –The Lady Purple Tornado got back to the winning ways in the pool, grabbing dominating 113-67 win over the Oneonta Yellowjackets on senior night last Tuesday evening.
Oneonta’s Anna Bischoff was the only Yellowjacket to win a swimming event, coming in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.06. The Yellowjackets also took the diving points of the meet as Norwich has no divers.
Oneonta diver Kylie McKee placed first, finishing with a 194.4 while teammate Angelica Goodhue scored a 151.85 for her dives to finish second.
The rest of the night went to Norwich and their seniors as every other event saw the Tornado finish in first.
In the 200 yard freestyle event, the Purple Tornado captured first, second and third in the race as Maya Blaisure swam to a time of 2:09.3 for the top finisher. Sister Kaitlyn touched the wall five seconds later and Ashton Wenzel came in just four ticks later.
Norwich opened up the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Melissa Stroh, Maya Blaisure, Aurora Shtrauch and Angela Carlson swam to a time of 2:02.85.
Despite it being Carlson’s first meet of the season as she was sidelined by an injury, she looked in mid-season form. In the 50 yard freestyle, Carlson swam a time of 26.24 to capture first place.
Haley Shattuck used her final split, the freestyle portion of the 200 yard individual medley event to finish first. Shattuck’s 36.28 in the last 50 yards allowed her to touch the wall two seconds ahead of any other swimmer in the race.
He teammate Shtrauch came in third while Tanner Olds finished fifth, giving Norwich 10 points in the event.
Stroh added an individual first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke, coming in at a time of 1:13.52. She finished third in the 50 free also.
The Blaisure sisters swam the longest race of the meet, the 500 yard freestyle. Maya recorded a time of 5:49.67 for first while kid sister Kaitlyn finished behind in second. Abi Natoli added a fifth place finish for an additional point toward Norwich’s team total.
Riley Revoir added a win for the Tornado with the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:20.28, just edging out teammate Wenzel by .7 of a second.
Prior to the breaststroke event, Wenzel and Revoir teamed up with Emerson Burton and Kaitlyn Blaisure for a time of 1:54.94 to win the 200 yard freestyle relay.
In the same event, Shtrauch and Olds were joined by Jasmine Potter and Addyson Whaley to place third in the event.
The 400 yard freestyle relay also saw the Tornado claim first in the event as the four Norwich seniors came together to win the final race of the night. Maya Blaisure, Madison Loeffler, Ashton Wenzel and Melissa Stroh finished with a time of 4:18.36 to cap off their final meet in their home pool.
Kaitlyn Blaisure, Shattuck, Burton and Carlson were not far behind as they came in second place less than a second later.
The Tornado now prepares for the Section IV preliminary meet, scheduled for October 31. The finals will be on November 3. Seeds for the events will be determined on October 28.
