Oxford and Action Cyclery team up to add PE elective for students

OXFORD – The Oxford Academy High School physical education department recently added an outdoor education elective to its program.
In the spring of 2018, physical education teachers Margo Barrows and Lance Thorne were approached by first year principal Mike Waters with the idea of a new offering.
After months of planning, the mountain biking new elective was ready to be offered to students in the fall semester.
Mountain biking was one of the first course offerings that came to mind, since it had been implemented in the traditional physical education course in years past.
“We knew it was going to be a challenge with the current condition of our bike fleet,” said Thorne. “It had been years since we had last utilized our existing bikes, and many of them needed major repair work in order to be usable once again.
“After inspecting our fleet, we decided to search locally for a bike shop for repairs and purchases.”
With a short search came recommendations from several trustworthy sources, Oxford chose Dan Sepello from Action Cyclery.
Sepello had barely hung his shingle at his new shop on 7 South Broad Street in Norwich when the school contacted him, but Thorne stated he was excited to get the ball rolling.
After inspecting the school’s condition of their current fleet, recommendations were made and bikes were loaded on a truck for repair at his Broad Street location. The PE teachers also decided to add two brand new bikes in order to accommodate the current student roster for the class.
On Wednesday, October 10, Sepello was gracious enough to volunteer his time to introduce the outdoor education students to mountain biking. Sepello covered how to pre-trip inspect the bikes, the different types of braking systems bikes have, how to check tire pressure, the chain, as well as proper seat height and pedals. Sepello even took time to teach how to remove and change a flat tire.
“The Oxford High School physical education department would like to personally thank Sepello for making our mountain biking unit an overwhelming success,” said Thorne. “Good luck to you and your business in Norwich.”
