Tigers’ six minute scoring spurt leads to win over Trojans
ENDICOTT – The Greene Trojans 2018 football team was seeking its first Section IV football championship Friday night at Union-Endicott High school. Standing in their way were the Tigers of Tioga, winners of six heading into the Class D championship game.
In the second quarter, Greene’s Nate Parker picked off a Brady Worthing pass. Using six plays in the drive, the Trojans marched down the field to take the 7-6 lead with quarterback Nate Erickson running the ball in from eight yards out with Zach Gibbon tacking on the point after attempt.
Three plays of the six for the scoring drives included completed passes from Erickson to his receivers. The Trojans QB finished the night with 107 yards, tossing 10 completions in 23 attempts.
Tioga, the defending champs, responded on the ensuing possession. With 56 yards in front of them, the Tigers used a 33 yard toss from Worthing to his receiver Mason Booser to put them closer to the end zone. Just four plays later, Worthing blasted his was through Greene’s defensive line to get over the goal line.
After taking back the lead running back John Worthing game them in the first quarter, the Tigers never lost it again.
In fact, Tioga went on to score 23 points in a span of nearly six minutes long – starting towards the end of the second quarter and carrying over into the third.
Adding to the second quarter touchdown, Tanner Hollenback closed out the first half scoring with a 26 yard field goal attempt that sailed through the up rights to give the Tigers the 15-7 advantage.
Tioga started the second half right where they left off.
Emmett Wood, the Tigers leading rusher this season, capped off the opening possession with a 12 yard touchdown run. He finished the contest with 25 carries for 187 yards on the ground.
Trailing 22-7 in the third, Greene aimed to start a comeback. But with just 3:34 off the clock in the quarter, the pursuit ended as Erickson’s pass fell incomplete near the 50 yard line.
Tioga’s Worthing ran for another touchdown, this time for 33 yards and Wood added a five yard rushing score, both in the stanza, and the Tigers went on to win 36-7.
As a team, The Tigers ran for 487 yards. John Worthing finished the game with 113 yards on 16 attempts while teammate Owen Wanck took 14 hand-offs and ran for 101. Brady Worthing added 71 yards in the ground in the win for the Tigers.
“Tioga has an outstanding offensive line and they were the difference both times we faced them,” said Trojans’ head coach Dave Gorton. “They are big and quick and they are very disciplined. We played a strong first half but they got the two late scores and we never recovered.”
Erickson carried the ball for 46 yards to lead Greene’s ground game. The Trojans’ were held to just 58 yards rushing in 48 minutes of play. Logan Kennedy led in the receiving column with two catches for 50 yards. Nate Barry caught three passes for 13 yards, Noah Kennedy was on the end of two completions for 22 yards and Parker had on catch on offense for 14 yards.
The Tigers earned their seventh Section IV Class D title in the last eight seasons. Tioga moves on to the quarterfinals of the New York State championship bracket and will see Section 3 champion Onondaga at 5 p.m. Friday. Game is to be played at Cicero-North Syracuse.
“Tioga took advantage of their chances and we didn’t,” said Gorton. “We had chances early and failed to make them count. It’s a disappointing end to a terrific season but all of our coaches are proud of the team.”
Greene closes the 2018 season with a 6-4 record.
