Sherburne Legion Auxiliary erects 85 flags dedicated to local veterans

By Grady Thompson

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne American Legion Auxiliary erected 85 American flags beside the memorial walkway in front of Gaines Park for two weeks surrounding Veterans Day, with each flag dedicated to a local veteran and displaying their name, service branch, and conflicts served.

The flags will adorn the memorial walkway during Sherburne's Veterans Day service on Sunday at 11:11 a.m.

Sherburne American Legion Auxiliary President Angela Jones said she was inspired to erect flags dedicated to veterans as part of a fundraising project for the legion auxiliary after seeing a similar display in another village. She said originally their goal was to have 25 flags, but they ended up easily surpassing that goal with 85 flags dedicated to local veterans.

"It's so impressive, especially at night," said Jones. "I've had many people come up to me and say it's breathtaking to see the flags and it's an honor to have a flag dedicated to a family member."

The flags were erected on November 3 and are scheduled to stay up through November 17, give or take a few days barring any inclement weather. Jones said each flag was purchased by a family member or spouse of local veterans past and present, and each family is invited to keep their flag following November 17 or have it stored to be displayed next year.

She said dedicating a flag costed $45, and if a family would like to have their flag flown next year, it will cost them $20.

Roughly 15 Legionnaires assisted with hanging the flags on November 3 using a five foot rebar for each flag two feet in the ground, a five foot piece of conduit over the rebar, and then a flag pole. Jones said Westcott Steel donated all 85 rebars.

The public is invited to attend Sunday's Veterans Day service at 11:11 a.m., which will consist of a 21 gun salute and local Boy Scouts presenting colors. Jones said she will speak at the event to dedicate the flags, and there will also other speakers from the military and Sherburne American Legion. A memorial wreath will be placed on the walkway to end the service.

Following the service the public is invited to go back to the Sherburne American Legion for lunch.
