Group creates and donates quilts to honor veterans

SHERBURNE – Members of a local quilting group called "One Stitch at a Time" handmade several patriotic quilts and presented them to 23 veterans during Sherburne's Veteran's Day ceremony.

According to One Stitch at a Time representative Trish Kane, last summer, the One Stitch at a Time Quilting Group from Sherburne, New York was looking for a way to honor our veterans.

"We had heard about the national group, Quilts of Valor, but wanted to do something on a more local level, and this is when the Quilts of Honor program was born," said Kane.

She said this year, the group decided to honor local WWII and Korean War Vets.

"We obtained a list of twenty-three veterans from our local American Legion and asked if we could be a part of their annual veteran’s day celebration, to which they readily agreed," she said.

Kane said ladies from the area spent the spring and summer months making lap top, patriotic quilts in preparation for Veterans Day.

On Sunday, November 11, following a chicken and biscuit dinner, the twenty-three quilts were presented to World War II and Korean War veterans by quilt representatives.

"It was an emotional presentation and the quilts were very well received by the veterans, friends and family members in attendance," said Kane. "A special thanks to all the wonderful ladies who made these beautiful quilts to present to our brave veterans from as far away as Oakwood, GA."

She said she would also like to thank the many individuals who supported this endeavor by donating fabric or making monetary donations to help cover the expense of making the quilts, and the American Legion Post #876 in Sherburne, NY for allowing them to be part of their event.

If you are interested in learning more about the Quilts of Honor program, making a quilt for a veteran, donating fabric for a quilt, or making a monetary donation, please feel free to contact Trish Kane at (607) 674-9656 or via email at: bobtrish68@twc.com.

"We welcome other quilting groups to join in this endeavor," said Kane. "If you would like to submit a name of a WWII or Korean War veteran from the Central NY area for possible consideration for next years program, again contact Trish for more information."
