Purple team prevails at Norwich’s annual alumni game and Meet the Players night
Vinal and Bonham repeat as 3-point champs; Alumni outlast JV team in Shooting Relay
NORWICH – On Friday, November 23, the Norwich Purple Tornado Basketball Booster Club hosted the third annual “Meet the Players Night” and witnessed familiar faces take the court in the alumni game.
In the annual alumni game the Purple team defeated the White team. Amos Parry, a member of the victorious Purple team was named the alumni game Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Prior to the alumni game, the 3-Point Shooting Contest and the Shooting Relay contest events where alumni and current Norwich Varsity and JV basketball players faced off in fun competitions.
The duo of Jordan Vinal and Tre Bonham outlasted the youthfulness of Carson Maynard and Tommy Flanagan in a overtime shootout to make it a three-peat in the 3-Point Shooting Contest.
The Shooting Relay once again saw an alumni team coming out on top of the event. Richie Bonney, Alex Wehrli, Jon Foulds and Justin Ballin defeated the junior varsity team of Logan Ford, Athen Genute, Carter VanHouten and Andrew Mullen in the finals.
“Overall it was once again a great night,” said John Vinal, Norwich Boys Basketball Booster Club President. “The 2018-2019 Varsity and Junior Varsity team’s would like to thank the community for coming out in record numbers to show their support of this years teams and cheering on their favorite players from the past in the alumni game.
“We would also like to give a big thanks to our volunteer referees Jeremy McKenna and Gary Muserallo for taking time out of their holiday schedule.”
The Purple Tornado’s first game of the season is Friday at Binghamton High School against Owego Free Academy as the two teams kick off the opening round of the Stop DWI Winter Classic Howland Divison-I bracket. Norwich and Owego play at 6 p.m. The winner of the game will face the winner of Binghamton and Vestal at 5:30 on Saturday in the same location.
If Norwich is to lose the first game, they will play on Saturday at 4 p.m.
