NORWICH – For $7 and an unopened toy, Chenango County residents can have a spaghetti supper and see a movie while supporting a good cause at the third annual Toys for Tots Spaghetti Supper Benefit at Colonia Theater on Wednesday.

The supper will take place from 4 p.m. to 7, with a showing of two movies immediately following at 7. Patrons of the dinner can watch either Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas or The Cat in the Hat at the theater.

The menu of Wednesday's supper is spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and bread prepared by Nina's, and dessert provided by Canasawacta Country Club. Dinner will take place upstairs in the theater's event space and the movies will be shown in the two theaters on the first floor.

Admission to the dinner and movie is $7 and an unopened toy to donate to Toys for Tots. Children five and under can eat for free.

Toys for Tots Spaghetti Supper Benefit chairperson Lon Yerton said last year's event – the first at the Colonia Theater – raised 3,500 toys and $1,000 dollars, all of which went towards the local Toys for Tots.

"We really stocked them up good last year, it was huge," said Yerton, noting all toys were donated to Toys for Tots and all proceeds from the supper were used to purchase additional toys.

But this year, they hope to raise the bar with more toys and money raised to help fill the void left by the recent closing of all Toys "R" Us stores, which used to offer discounted toys to organizations buying toys for Toys for Tots.

"It will be a little different [without Toys "R" Us]," said Yerton. "We're going to need more donations. So we're looking for everyone to come out and make everybody's Christmas a brighter one in Chenango County."

In attendance at this year's event, Yerton said, will be himself as The Cat in the Hat, along with characters Thing 1 and Thing 2, Belle and the Prince from Beauty and the Beast, and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Members of the Norwich Police Department, Norwich Fire Department, and Supreme Court Justice-Elect Joe McBride will be in attendance as well, and Senator Fred Akshar has been invited and will attend if his schedule permits.

Depending on the amount of money raised, Yerton said a portion of proceeds will also go towards a veterans wreath fund to support an initiative to purchase wreaths for veterans' graves in Chenango County for Memorial Day in May.

While last year's event was a great success, Yerton said, "We'd like to have a lot more people, there's room for more people. There was certainly a lot last year but the more the merrier. It will make the kids' Christmases merrier too."

Yerton extended his thanks to the Barnes family for donating the use of the Colonia Theater, as well as all sponsors for making the event possible.

If you have any questions about the event, visit or call Nina's at (607) 334-6278. The Colonia Theater is located at 35 Broad Street in Norwich.
