Lady Trojans keep Greene Tip-off trophy at home with back-to-back wins
GREENE – Two great showings in their first games of the season lead the Lady Trojans of Greene to the Greene Girls Basketball Tip-off tournament trophy. Saturday afternoon’s championship 49-26 win over Chenango Forks came after a 56-14 victory over Thomas A. Edison Friday night.
Greene opened the title game with a four point lead and extended it after a 9-3 second quarter run into halftime.
The Trojans rolled to the win after adding another third quarter run, putting them ahead by 18 points. Kylee Peck led Greene in the scoring column with 15. Nine of her points came from long-distance. McKenna Sergi capped off a weekend performance with 14 points while Emma Smith chipped in 10.
While Forks attempted to make a comeback in the fourth, scoring the only double digit quarter allowed by the Trojans’ defense, Greene put up big numbers in the final eight minutes as well to give the host team a 23 point win.
The Trojans’ reached the finals behind Smith’s game-high 19 points on Friday, out scoring Thomas A. Edison by five points on her own. Sergi recorded 10 points in the win while three of their teammates finished with six points each.
Thomas A. Edison scored eight points in the first against Greene but the Trojans’ defense held their opponent to just two points in each of the final three quarters.
“I thought our defense and ball movement were great, especially for a young team,” said Greene’s head coach Dave Gorton. “We had 15 assists on Saturday and we moved the ball very well. Defensively, we allowed one double digit quarter for the weekend and we will need to do that through the season to be successful.”
The Oxford Blackhawks faced Edison in the consolation game Saturday afternoon and secured their first win of the young season with a final of 47-26.
The Blackhawks started the game in a rythym, outscoring Thomas A. Edison, 11-6. TAE answered with 10 points in the second quarter but Oxford continued to add to their lead, tacking on 13 points before the break.
A low scoring third by both teams still had the Blackhawks in the lead. With their 15-5 run through the final stretch of eight minutes, Oxford claimed the 19 point win.
Karley Miller led the Blackhawks’ offense, finishing the day with 14 points. She recorded a double-double by pulling down 11 boards as well.
Ellie Ryan of Oxford tallied eight points in the win while Hannah Hodge ended the contest with seve points. Caitlyn Quickly and Jada Albin each grabbed eight rebounds as the Blackhawks controlled the rebounding column 43-32.
“It was nice to get our first win of the season Saturday,” said Chris Palmer, Oxford’s head coach. “Each girl on the team contributed and that’s always nice to see.”
With the long part of Friday’s game remaining close, Chenango Forks used a 13 point fourth and 29 turnovers by the Blackhawks to separate themselves from Oxford, securing the 39-31 win in the first round of the tournament.
Forks jumped out to an early 8-4 lead after one quarter of play but the Lady Blackhawks battled back, out scoring the Blue Devils 20-18 over the middle two quarters.
In the final quarter, the Forks defense stopped the Oxford momentum by holding the Blackhawks to just seven points.
Miller ended Friday night with a game-high 10 points. Quigley scored six and Allison Beckwith added four in the loss. Hodge led the team with eight rebounds.
“Friday was a hard fought game,” said Palmer. “However, we committed too many turnovers and it was a little too much to overcome. We were in a one possession game going into the final two minutes, and we were happy with the attitude and effort we just couldn’t quite pull out the victory.”
Miller was named to the All-Tournament team for Oxford. She was joined by Marissa Will and Bree Fargnoli of Chenango Forks. Greene’s Smith and Peck were selected for the host team. Sergi was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Oxford travels to Laurens on Tuesday for a non-league game at 7 p.m. Greene hosts Delhi on Thursday for their first league game of the season. The Trojans and the Bulldogs are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. game time.
