Greene and S-E out swim opponents to earn first win of season
GREENE – The Greene Trojan swimmers captured their first win of the new year, defeating the Susquehanna Valley Sabers 78-73 Friday evening.
Second and third place finishers in the meet were where the points were picked up by each team as both Greene and Sus Valley won six events, splitting the meet in for first place finishers.
Starting the meet off with a first place finished was the Trojans’ 200 yard medley relay team. Kevin Gyurik, Luke DeJager, Dustin Markham and Trent deHaan raced to a time of 2:11.09 for the win.
The Sabers took the next two events but Greene’s Markham out swam the field in the 50 yard freestyle sprint, winning with a time of 25.88 seconds.
Susquehanna Valley’s Kadin LeVene won the diving event and teammate Richard Bedosky took first the event following, the 100 yard butterfly, to give the Sabers the lead.
The Trojans’ took the advantage back when deHaan swam a 58.57 in the 100 yard freestyle while DeJager helped by winning his first individual event of the night in the 500 yard freestyle. In the longest race of the meet, DeJager touched the wall in 6:23.71.
Markham also won the 100 yard backstroke and was a member of the 400 yard freestyle rally team that secured the victory for Greene. He was joined by Dalton Krupp, deHaan and DeJager as the foursome raced to first place with a time of 4:22.72.
Greene goes to a 1-1 record on the season and will look to add another win on Tuesday against Dryden. Meet is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start time.

SHERBURNE – In the first meet of the new season, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders swim team defeated Cooperstown 54-43 at home on Thursday.
S-E started the meet off with a win in the 200 yard medley relay as the foursome of Conor Ryan, Caleb Larcher, Mathew Ryan and Declan Wilson finished in a time of 1:54.59.
The Marauders followed it up with a 1-2 finished in the 200 yard freestyle event. Emma Crespi of Sherburne-Earlville took first with a time of 2:28.71 and teammate Josh Larcher touched the wall .3 of a second later.
Cooperstown’s Maddox Aramini won the 200 yard individually medley and Gareth Austin came in right after for second.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Ian Wilson swam a 25.10 in the 50 yard free – the shortest race of the swim meet – to beat out runner-up William Friedman of the Hawkeyes by .69 of a second.
Anna Rinaldo of the Marauders captured first in diving, finished with a score of 174 points.
Caleb Larcher added an individual event win to his victory earlier in the night, swimming to a time of 1:05.38 in the 100 yard butterfly.
Friedman added another win to Cooperstown’s total, capturing the 100 yard freestyle event. His colleague Michael Kelley gave the Hawkeyes more points toward the team’s score as he took the victory in the 500 yard freestyle.
S-E claimed all relay events in the meet, winning both the 200 yard and the 400 yard freestyle relays.
The team of Caleb Larcher, Conor Ryan, Rinaldo and Ian Wilson swam a 1:46.14 in the 200 yard race while Ian, Conor, Mathew and Josh Larcher finished the 400 yard event in 4:05.21.
Cooperstown’s Aramini added the 100 yard backstroke to his list of wins in the meet and Austin won the 100 yard breaststroke.
The Marauders (1-0) travel on Tuesday to face Utica-Proctor as they look to add another tally to the win column. The two reams are scheduled to start in the pool at 4:30 p.m.
