UV school building project vote passes
NEW BERLIN – Voters approved Unadilla Valley School District's $10 million dollar building project on Thursday night, and officials said the next step is to get approval from the New York State Education Department.
According to school officials, the building project passed 102 to 46, and the total cost of the project expected to cost approximately $10 million dollars with work on the project tentatively scheduled begin in the spring of 2020.
"We would like to thank all of the district voters who turned out tonight, and we would also like to thank those district residents who gave us feedback and asked questions about both this project, as well as the district’s buildings and grounds maintenance in general,” Unadilla Valley Superintendent Robert Mackey said. “We are proud of our school community and school facilities and take our responsibility as stewards of both very seriously.”
According to school officials, the bulk of the project will be funded by state aid, along with up to $1.8 million from the district’s capital reserve fund.
"There is no anticipated impact on the school’s tax levy," said officials. "The work is tentatively slated to begin in spring 2020."
Officials said the next step in the school's process is to finalize the plans and submit them to the New York State Education Department for approval.
They added that approving the project will allow the school to make several upgrades and repairs including, a the installation of a new electronic sign in front of the school, the replacement of drinking fountains, HVAC units, and the south parking lot.
“Many components of the project are related to increasing energy efficiency at the school building and ensuring the school’s facilities remain a modern, comfortable and safe place in which to learn and work,” stated officials. “The bulk of the project will be funded by state aid, along with a distribution of up to $1.8 million from the district’s capital reserve fund.”
Mackey said, “The work outside on our track and football field should be an aid-able expenditure along with the work we’re doing on the inside of the building.”
He said the school scheduled the vote for December because it can take more than a year for the New York State Education Department to approve building projects after they are passed by voters, with bidding process adding additional wait time as well.
“Putting the project out for vote now, when the designs and plans are established according to current cost estimates, could also help keep the project under budget and less susceptible to inflationary pressures,” said Mackey.
Unadilla Valley School District Head Maintenance Mechanic Bill Beadle also spoke on the budget and maintenance that needs to be done on the blacktop throughout the school’s parking lots.
“A lot of the seams in the blacktop are deteriorating,” said Beadle. “Under one of our parking lots is the cover to our geothermal field.”
