Hill’s dunk gives S-E boost in win over Phoenix

SHERBURNE – With 10.1 seconds left in the third quarter, Sherburne-Earlville’s Robert Hill took the ball the length of the floor and finished with a two-handed slam dunk. Hill’s highlight play gave the host Marauders a momentum swing in their favor as they headed into the final quarter. 
S-E then went on a 19 point run in the fourth to take the 66-59 win over the visiting Phoenix Firebirds.
The Marauders opened up the contest with a 24 point first quarter, led by Gabe Irwin and Hunter Lane’s eight points in the eight minute stretch.
S-E led after the first, 24-18 but it was the two middle quarters that gave the Firebirds the 48-47 lead by the end of the third.
In the fourth, Sherburne-Earlville used a 3-pointer by Irwin to take the lead but Phoenix answered with a three of their own by Adam Hahn.
As the clock showed 5:02, Lane hit a shot from beyond the arc to take the lead back. 20 seconds later, the Firebirds’ Dominck DeMong made a basket to tie it.
Scoring all of his points in the game at the free throw line in the fourth, S-E’s Ryan Asma made his first two to give the Marauders the lead for good with 4:40 left in the game.
In the last four 4:30 of the game, Sherburne-Earlville outscored their opponent 9-4.
Lane led all Marauders scorers in the game with 24 while Irwin finished with his season-high 16 points. Hill also reached double digits, tallying 10 points and John Oley added nine.
Phoenix was led by Jack Allen’s 26 in the loss.
Sherburne-Earlville (5-1) hosts Clinton for a league matchup at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
