Alleged child rapist denied bail reduction
NORWICH – A Norwich man accused of child rape appeared in Norwich City Court on Thursday, and waived his right to have a felony hearing and was denied a bail reduction.
Jamie Lynn Whitmore Jr., 23, of Norwich was charged with first-degree rape, a class B felony, first-degree criminal sexual act, a class B felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
According to court records, the crime allegedly occurred on November 19, on Borden Avenue, in the City of Norwich with a six-year-old victim.
Whitmore appeared with his attorney, Jonathan Becker, and said he needed a new attorney due to a conflict of interest with the attorneys at the public defender's office.
"My client was arrested two days ago, and our intention is to waive the timeliness of the felony hearing for now," said Becker.
He added that the current bail is far beyond anything his client can afford to pay.
"The current bail is way outside my client's ability to pay," said Becker. "I would ask the bail be reduced to $1,000 cash bail."
First Assistant District Attorney Michael Ferrarese said Whitmore is a flight risk due to the seriousness of the charges and the time he could face in prison.
"The defendant faces 25 years in state prison," said Ferrarese. "He poses a serious flight risk, and the people would ask that bail remain the same to ensure he appears at future court dates."
Norwich City Court Judge Michael Genute kept bail the same at $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
Genute then set a return date for 1:30 p.m. on January 3rd, if Whitmore isn't indicted.
