Lady Marauders’ comeback bid falls short in 4th quarter; B-G handed second loss of season by Delhi
HERKIMER – The Sherburne-Earlville Lady Marauders fell just short of the win Monday, losing a 43-42 non-league contest to the Herkimer Magicians after battling to gain a lead late in the game.
In the final eight minutes of play, S-E took the lead with four points by Tessa Cole and Sage Ashton. However, the tides changed and the momentum went in favor of Herkimer with 3:32 left.
Alana Ferri of the Magicians scored four straight points to close the Marauders lead down to one. Cole then scored with two minutes left but it was the last basket scored by a Sherburne-Earlville player for the game.
Eliza Marusic scored four points in the late minutes of play, giving Herkimer the one points lead with 25 seconds left. The S-E team had two scoring chances but were unable to put the ball through the net to pull off the comeback bid.
Sherburne-Earlville trailed by five at the end of the first quarter. In the second, they were able to put together a 5-0 run towards the end to close the deficit down to three points as the two teams went into the locker room at halftime.
The start of the third was all the Marauders as Ashton knocked down a 3-pointer to tied the game. Her next basket gave S-E the lead for the first time since the early minutes of the game.
Ashton finished the game with 12 points and Cole recorded a team-high 18 points. Kaitlyn Furner added nine for the Marauders.
Herkimer was led by Ferri’s game-high 19 points and colleague Marusic chipped in 11.
Sherburne-Earlville (7-5, 2-2) hosts Hamilton Thursday for a non-league contest. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

BAINBRIDGE – Outscoring the Delhi Bulldogs in the fourth by a score of 9-6, the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats closed the six point lead held by their opponent. However, in the closing minutes B-G could not finish the comeback attempt, seeing just their second loss of the teams to league foe Delhi with a final of 36-33 Friday night.
Bainbridge-Guilford head coach Bob Conway attributed the loss to the 21 turnovers and the 22.9 shooting percentage by his team.
On top of the two, Conway stated, foul trouble for the Bobcats plagued the team early.
Both teams struggled to start the game as the score at the end of the first quarter was 8-4 with the Bulldogs holding the lead.
B-G battled back, tacking on 15 points before the break and cutting the Delhi lead down to one. During the stanza, the Bobcats were paced by Abi Selfridge as the senior forward scored 11 of the team’s 15 points in the second.
Following the intermission, Selfridge made five of her six attempts at the foul line but it was the only points Bainbridge-Guilford registered in the quarter. Delhi opened up another lead, scoring 10 points in the eight minute span and the two teams headed into to the fourth quarter.
Selfridge went 10-for-11 (90.9-percent) from the line, counting for 10 of her game-high 22 points. Alli Miller chipped in five points in the loss.
Delhi’s Sophia Wakin put up a team-high 10 points to lead the team offensively and Anna Post added eight.
The Bobcats will look to rebound from the loss when they travel to Afton for a 7:15 p.m. tip Tuesday night.
