YMCA offers New Year-New You Fitness Program

NORWICH – The Norwich Y is offering a New Year-New You fitness program to help individuals looking to lose weight, change their bodies, and get fit.

According to YMCA program coordinators, the Y's New Year program is individualized to meet the needs of anyone of any age or ability.

YMCA Program Assistant Pat Dietrich said, “I think I have participated in every fitness challenge the Y has offered in the last few years. I just finished one that ended mid-December, and am ready to do it again to get my eating back under control after the holidays."

She added, "The results of the last challenge were amazing. Everyone who completed the ten week program lost on average seven and a half pounds and more importantly almost 9 inches. Most participants lost the weight and inches while significantly reducing body fat and gaining lean muscle."

Shannon Gawronski, the health and fitness director at the YMCA, added, “Pat has done so many of these challenges that I’ve made her my assistant, to make sure everyone in the challenge gets the attention he or she needs.”

The New Year-New You program is a fitness challenge in which you compete with yourself, and with others, if you so choose, to eat better and be more active each week for ten weeks.

Program coordinators said by using this program, you will get real results, and after ten weeks, eating well and being more active will be more of a habit or a new way of life for you, and hopefully you will continue to do so after the challenge ends.

Lynn Kline, who is getting ready to join her second get fit challenge at the Y so she can continue her progress, said, “Participating in the challenges holds you accountable for the foods you eat and the exercise you choose."

Kline said the feedback you receive from the coordinators is very helpful and keeps you motivated to continue towards being healthier. Organizers added that Kline lost five pounds and almost nine inches, while losing almost five percent body fat and significantly increasing skeletal muscle.

Gawronski and her assistant will guide and motivate you through the ten week program. The challenge starts with a practice week. During this week you will go to the Y to get your initial body composition assessment done, to use as a baseline.

You will also learn how to use your activity and food log forms, so you get used to using them before the actual challenge begins. Participants will award themselves points for making better food choices and increasing their activity each week until they reach a level that’s optimal for them, said organizers. "It’s that easy. The forms document the amount and types of activity you perform, as well as the quality of your diet, said Gawronski.

Organizers said these forms are turned into Gawronski at the end of each week and the information provided is used to coach you through the rest of the challenge. They added that you will receive feedback every week, usually by email, telling you what you are doing well and how you might be able to improve.

At the end of five weeks, you will get the midterm body assessment, so you can see how the program is helping you, and there is a final full body assessment at the end of the ten week program too. This challenge gets real results that you will be able to see from your body composition assessment data, as well as how well your clothes fit, and how much stronger you feel.

There are prizes for those of you who complete the ten week challenge and are most successful. Kathleen O’Connor, one of the most successful participants from the last get fit Y challenge, said she is planning to join in next week’s challenge.

She added, “This challenge truly worked. It helped me make healthier food and lifestyle choices. This program kept me motivated and moving.” Kathy lost 11.4 pounds and nearly 13 inches after only 10 weeks, while losing almost three percent body fat and gaining skeletal muscle.

To register in the New Year-New You fitness program, or to get more information, please call Shannon Gawronski at the YMCA (607-336-9622).

"Sign up now to get the support you need to be successful with your get fit New Year’s resolution and be ready for spring," said Gawronski.

The challenge is only $50 for members and $200 for nonmembers. The fee includes the three full body composition assessments, as well as your weekly personal feedback. Individual informational meetings, sign ups and registration will begin on Monday, January 14, 2019. The actual program will run from Monday, January 21 until Sunday, March 31.
