Trojans’ pressure Hornets in MAC win

HARPURSVILLE – Nearly every member of the Greene Trojans’ roster scored a basket in their 70-29 team win over the host Hornets of Harpursville Tuesday, a Midstate Athletic Conference contest.
Nate Barry of the Trojans had a big game for his team, scoring 12 of his game-high 19 points in the first half as the Greene created a 33-19 lead by halftime.
The full court pressure by the Trojans in the first half caused many turnovers by the Hornets, leading to points on the scoreboard for the visiting team. Greene’s head coach Chris Rice stated that his team had many opportunities out of the aggressive press but his team missed many layups.
Harpursville scored 15 in the second quarter – their largest offensive production in any of the four quarters – to chip away at the 13 point lead the Trojans created after the first. The Hornets received nine of those points from behind the 3-point arc as Dylan Hagerman drained two and Eric Wilkinson saw one go through the night.
The strong team defense showing by Greene continued in the second half, holding Harpursville to a total of 10 points in the second half.
As they were able to reduce their turnovers compared to the last game the Trojans played, Greene controlled the tempo of the contest. Seven different players scored a bucket in the third quarter as the visiting team put up 26 points in the eight minute stretch.
Brandon Whitaker dialed in from long-distance, hitting two 3-pointers in the stanza. Whitaker made another one in the first half and finished the contest with 11 points.
Spencer Klumpp and Nate Erickson each tallied eight points, aiding in the scoring column for the Greene win.
Hagerman ended the night with a team-high 10 points for the Hornets, the only player to score double figures for the home team.
The Trojans are now off until they travel to Walton on Friday, January 25. Game time is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.

Unatego 53, Bainbridge-Guilford 52
BAINBRIDGE – Shea Barber of the Unatego Spartans drove to the basket with two seconds left in regulation. With all eyes on him, Barber pulled up about 12-feet away from the rim and knocked down the jumper at the buzzer to give the Spartans a 53-52 road win over host Bainbridge-Guilford Tuesday night.
With the score at 52-51 with 12 seconds showing on the clock, the Bobcats were at the line to shoot two free throws. However, both missed and Unatego came down with the rebound. Using a timeout to advance the ball to half court, drawing up the game winner by Barber.
The Bobcats took an early 13-11 lead after the first quarter as Trenton Thornton paced B-G with six points off of two made 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes. Thornton had support from Tom Palmatier in the quarter, kicking in two made buckets from the inside.
The second quarter was one of a different tale. Unatego held the Bobcats to five points – all coming from Palmatier – while the Spartans went on an offensive run behind Austin Faulkner’s 10 points in the stanza. Unatego went into the locker room at half time with a seven point advantage.
After the break, the Bobcats found their shot from long range and cut the deficit down to one point with one quarter remaining. Devon Scherhaufer, Thornton and Palmatier all knocked down a shot from behind the 3-point arc during the quarter.
Scherhaufer led B-G during their 19 point run with nine of his 11 points in the game while teammate Haiden Burns added four.
With two teams in a back and forth game in the final quarter, Bainbridge-Guilford battled back and led by as many as five points late in the contest. The Spartans, answered and pulled within one point with 12 seconds left.
That’s when Barber stole the win with his game-winner, breaking the Bobcats’ hearts on their home floor.
Faulkner finished with 23 in the game – 16 of them coming in the first half – to lead all scorers and Barber ended the night with 16.
Palmatier was a force inside all game, scoring a team-best 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to chalk up another double-double for the season.
Scherhaufer tallied 11 and Thorton added 10 points, nine coming on three made 3-pointers. Burns also chipped in 10 for the Bobcats.
B-G plays on back-to-back day as they visit Gilbertsville-Mount Upton at 7 p.m. on Wednesday for a non-league contest.

DEPOSIT – Unadilla Valley extended their win streak to eight after picking up the victory on the road, defeating Deposit/Hancock 64-51 Tuesday.
After dealing with a tough early season stretch, UV has turned their 2-4 start into a current 10-4 record with five wins coming against Midstate Athletic Conference opponents.
Andrew Jackson and Wyatt Grey had the hot hand for the Storm as each hit three 3-pointers in the contest and Levi Rifanburg dominated the inside, finishing the game with 16 points.
UV held their opponents to nine points in each of the first three quarters, building a 62-27 lead entering the fourth. Head coach Matt Osborne said he then emptied his bench, allowing everyone sometime in the final eight minutes.
Deposit/Hancock took advantage of the youth on the floor for the Storm, out scoring Unadilla Valley 24-2.
Cole Russell led the Eagles, pouring in a game-high 23 points in the loss. Teammate Tyler Santamaria kicked in 12.
Jackson scored 19 for the contest and grabbed 12 boards off the glass for another double-double recorded this season. He added six assists to his statline. Grey contributed nine for the Storm.
The Storm will look to continue their win streak when they head to Sidney Thursday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. for the MAC battle.

OXFORD – The stingy Delhi Bulldogs defense caused many miscues in the Blackhawks offense Tuesday night, leading to a 56-34 MAC league win on Oxford’s home floor.
The Blackhawks were held to single digits in the first three quarters of play after the Bulldogs aggressive defense forced turnover after turnover. Delhi’s defensively created offense built a seven point lead after the first and extended it to 31 by the end of the third.
Oxford outscored the Bulldogs in the final stanza 14-5 with Jason Davis’ eight points in the eight minutes of play. Davis went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the quarter – 8-for-8 for the game – and added a basket on the inside. The Blackhawk senior ended the contest with 12 points to lead his team in the loss.
Alex Smith of Oxford added eight while C.J. Smith and Brad Beckwith chipped in six points each.
Delhi’s Conor Aikens and Alex Haight each scored 12 in the game for a team-high. Michael Griswold put up 10.
