Norwich YMCA honors volunteers with annual dinner and ceremony
NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA held an award ceremony earlier this month recognizing individuals for their volunteer work throughout the year, and six were honored as heroes in different categories.
On January 10 at the Canasawacta Country Club, the YMCA held its 131 annual dinner and hero award recognition for volunteers who supported the Y throughout 2018.
According to Norwich YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen, this event is dedicated to the individuals who are willing to work for the greater good of the community without asking for pay.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and our community,” said Mullen. “Their dedication and support are greatly appreciated and have not gone unnoticed.”
He said the six people honored in the ceremony for being volunteer heroes were split into different categories based on how they volunteered. He added that youth volunteers Jacob Phillips and Grayson Boyer, adult volunteers Pat Dowdall and Richard Howard, and staff volunteers Mary Fox and Sydnee Chaffee were the individuals honored at the ceremony.
Mullen said it’s important to recognize the hard work of the volunteers that weren’t on that list as well, as the community would be significantly worse off without them.
“The first Norwich YMCA was built by volunteers in London England 173 years ago,” said Mullen. “Approximately 17 years after that volunteers built the Norwich YMCA as well.”
According to the Y’s mission statement, the YMCA is a non-profit charitable organization for individuals of all ages, creeds and classes united in the common effort to develop the body, mind and spirit of families, communities, and individuals through activities guided by and based on Christian principles.
