SIDNEY – Playing a strong fourth quarter, the Unadilla Valley Lady Storm ended their four game losing streak and earned their first Midstate Athletic Conference win of the season with a 51-47 final over the host Sidney Warriors.
After trailing 15-9 after one quarter of play, the Storm battled back to cut the lead down to three points at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Unadilla Valley’s Kyleigh George scored four buckets – three in a row towards the end of the quarter – as the Storm completely erased the early deficit held by the Warriors. UV went up by two with a Shelby Meade basket at the end of the quarter.
The Storm finished the game out with clutch free throw shooting, going 7-for-12 as a team at the stripe. Unadilla Valley head coach Brandi Whitbeck commented that her team didn’t shoot well at the line earlier in the game but made the shots when they counted the most.
Seven of the eight UV players that stepped onto the floor made at least two points in the game. George led the way with 19 points – a game-high behind eight field goals and 3-of-6 from the foul line.
Adding eight points each in the win were teammates Shelby Meade and Kayla Christian while Kirsten White scored six. Sophie Off added five for the Storm, who played without starter and scoring contributor Meegan White due to illness.
Pacing the Warriors in the scoring column were Savannah Baldwin and Emma Simmons as each tallied 10 points in the close loss. Hailey Larson chipped in nine and Krystal Bivar scored eight for the Sidney.
The Storm don’t play again until Thursday, when they travel to Chenango Forks for a non-league matchup. Game time is slated for 7:15 p.m.
