Village of Bainbridge officials urge residents to boil water

BAINBRIDGE – The Chenango County Health Department issued a boil water order for the Village of Bainbridge Water District effective Thursday after a water main broke somewhere throughout the village’s water supply.

A section of the warning reads as follows, “Do not drink the water without boiling it first... Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.”

Bainbridge officials said they are almost certain that the break is somewhere near Newton Creek and Kirby Street, but are still working to isolate and repair the water main.

At around 4:45 a.m. on Friday, the village sent out an official release stating water pressure for those who were lacking it should be returning, but water in the village will likely be very cloudy, and they suggested allowing the water to run for awhile to help clear it up.

The village said it is working to find and isolate the break in the water main, but in the meantime older valves are not closing properly so must be replaced to fully restore pressure on Kirby between West Main and the creek. It added that they are working on restoring some pressure to the Greenlawn and other Northern areas so users will have some water for basic needs but it will be limited.

“We are evaluating full solutions to the break but they won’t be immediate,” stated the village in a release. “Please know that your village crew will continue to work as long as necessary to restore water service.”

They added that the fire department has implemented plans to provide fire fighting capability in light of limited fire hydrant water, if necessary.

According to the Chenango County Health Department Environmental Division’s boil water order, the advisory will remain in effect until the condition is resolved and sampling indicates the water to be within New York State Health Department guidelines, and notice will be given when the issue has been corrected.
