Wooden, McGraw combine for 40; Yellowjackets too much for the Tornado

ONEONTA – Norwich fell behind 9-0 in the early minutes of the game on the road against long-time rival Oneonta Tuesday night. The Purple Tornado were unable to catch the Yellowjackets throughout the remainder of the contest as Oneonta avenged their early season loss to Norwich, 61-41.
The Yellowjackets’ Teddy McGraw and Graham Wooden combined for 40 of the home team’s 61 points on senior night.
“Wooden and McGraw just took it to us,” said Norwich head coach Tom Collier. “We had no response.”
Oneonta ended the first quarter leading 13-6 and extended the margin to 11 by the intermission break.
Norwich came out of the break, mounting some offense as they turned to Skylar Wenzel – their big man in the middle.
“Once we got the ball into Skylar we were able to compete,” Collier said. Wenzel ended the night as the only Purple Tornado in the scoring column with double figures, finishing with 11 points.
The Tornado pulled within seven points in the third but Wooden drained back-to-back 3-pointers for the Yellowjackets, ending the Norwich run.
Wooden led all scorers with 21 points while McGraw added with 19. Khi Atchinson aided in the Oneonta win, kicking in 15 points.
Mujuni Mutabiilwa chipped in nine points for the Norwich offense while Thomas Flanagan added eight in the loss.
“Offensively, we never go into sync and our execution wasn’t the best,” said Collier. “In the end, we need to learn from this and be able to rebound. It doesn’t get any easier on Thursday as we go to Seton.
“We have struggled all year on the road to mount any consistent attack offensively. We need to be able to overcome our timidness and execute and compete the way we know we can.”
Norwich’s game against Seton is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time at Seton Catholic High School.

HARPURSVILLE – Leading 24-3 after the first quarter, Unadilla Valley cruised to a 56-39 Midstate Athletic Conference win Monday night.
The Storm jumped out to the early lead behind Andrew Jackson’s seven points while Levi Rifanburg and Cameron Osborne each added six points, combining for 19 of UV’s 24 first-quarter points.
Seeing limited action in the first and third quarters of play only, Jackson finished with 10 points while dishing out eight assists. He also grabbed six boards off the glass.
Rifanburg and Osborne, who also saw less playing time in the contest, each added one more basket to to score eight points each.
As Unadilla Valley head coach Matt Osborne went to his bench for most of the game, all but two players scored for the Storm with Dom Anderson leading the way with six points. Wyatt Grey, Dylan Nichols and Blaine Rifanburg each scored five points.
Harpursville closed out the game with a 20 point fourth quarter. Zach Fynboe scoed all eight of his points in the high scoring quarter for the Hornets. Teammate Brandon Goodnow tallied six in the final eight minutes of play, ending the night with 16 points to lead all scorers. .
The Storm hosts Oxford on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. Prior to the start of the contest, coach Osborne will honor his seniors of the 2018-2019 season.

FRANKLIN – Trailing by 13 at the end of the third quarter of action, Oxford attempted a comeback against Franklin on Monday night with 23 points scored in the final eight minutes of play. However, the late-game rally fell just short as Franklin earn the victory over the visiting Blackhawks, 51-48.
Oxford had kept the game within reach throughout the first half, going into the intermission down by six points.
Out of the break, the Blackhawks were limited to just five points while Franklin put 12 points up on the scoreboard – six coming from the hot 3-point shooting hand of Matt Serrao. Serrao hit a total of five for the game as he finished with 19 points to lead all scorers.
The fourth-quarter resurgence by Oxford came on scoring shoulders of Jason Davis and Matt Roach with the two combining for 19 of the Blackhawks 23.
Davis ended the night with a team-best 18 points and Roach scored 14 in the loss.
Franklin’s Carson Dutcher scored 12 points while Tyler Gregory finished with 10 points in the win.
Oxford travels to Unadilla Valley Wednesday before returning home on Thursday where they will host Bainbridge-Guilford for the Blackhawks senior night contest. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.

HOLLAND PATENT – Playing three games in four days took a toll on the Marauders Monday night as they ran out of gas against Holland Patent in the fourth quarter, losing their first Center State Conference divisional game of the season, 77-52.
Sherburne-Earlville’s offense mounted just seven points in the final eight minutes while the home Golden Knights went on scoring rout, putting 24 fourth-quarter points up on the scoreboard.
Holland Patent opened the game with a 19-11 lead but the Marauders cut into the lead, pulling within five points at halftime.
As the two teams came out of the locker room for the second half of action, the Golden Knights once again outscored S-E, going back up by eight points.
Entering the fourth down by four possession, Sherburne-Earlville’s offense was halted by Holland Patent as the Marauders made just two field goals in the stanza.
“[Holland Patent] played like a team that had to win to have any chance at the league title,” said Marauders’ head coach Kevin Vibbard.
S-E’s Hunter Lane scored 22 to lead the Marauders. Teammate Ryan Asma added 12 while Gabe Irwin tallied eight points in the loss.
The Golden Knights’ Josh Ernst led all scorers with 31 points while teammates Jeff Sobel and DJ Harter ended the night with 13 points each.
Sherburne-Earlville travels to Clinton Thursday evening. If the Maraduers win, they will win the league outright. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

WALTON – Walton’s Tommy Maguire and Jose Mirabal combined for 20 of the Warriors 28 first-quarter points as the home team claimed the 65-38 win over Bainbridge-Guilford Monday night.
Walton held the Bobcats to just four points in the opening stanza but B-G responded in the second, outscoring the Warriors 16-15 behind Devon Scherhaufer’s nine points. Scherhaufer finished with a team-high 16 points as he added seven in the fourth.
The Bobcats came out of the halftime intermission struggling to score once again, adding just five points to their total. In the same quarter, Walton tacked another 14 points onto their score, cruising to the win.
During the contest, the Warriors’ Dylan Jacob of the broke the school’s assist record, surpassing the previous record of 630 assists. Jacob is a three-year varsity player for Walton.
Maguire led the Warriors with 16 points while Mirabal recorded a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Brett Charles netted nine points and Jacob scored six points.
The Bobcats saw Thomas Palmatier score eight and Trent Thornton chip in six points.
