Marauders’ Thompson wins 220 pound Section III championship

SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville’s Alex Thompson earned a trip to the Time Union Center for the New York State Division-II Wrestling Championships in two weeks after winning the 220 pound Section III title Saturday night.

Thompson, who has been dealing with a back injury for the last few weeks, started his four-match day off with an 11-3 major decision over Mitchell Tanner from Port Byron.

In the quarterfinals, the Marauders’ junior pinned his opponent in the third period, moving into the semifinals against the second-seeded Jared Makuch of South Lewis.

Pulling off the slight upset, Thompson won 5-0 to move into the championship bout against the top seed of the 220 pound bracket, Josh Greenwood of Beaver River.
