Norwich’s Alvogen receives global recognition for community support

NORWICH – After leading its company in community support, Norwich’s Alvogen received global recognition for its work in local beautification projects, employee leadership, and non-profit support.

Alvogen is a pharmaceutical company operating in 35 countries around the world with one of their leading production facilities in Norwich, New York.

According to Charlie Andrews, Vice President of Operations at Norwich’s Alvogen, a global meeting was recently held in Reykjavik, Iceland for the leaders of the Alvogen business.

“Senior members of the global organization gathered to recognize their shared accomplishment of growing the business from $35 Million in revenue to over $1 Billion in just under 10 years,” said Andrews. “Plans were established to continue that success and our Norwich facility plays strongly in those plans.”

He said in recognition of the great work being done internationally, five internal awards were delivered by Alvogen’s CEO, and the “Better Planet Award,” was accepted by the leaders of the Norwich facility.

“The Better Planet Award recognizes the positive impact the Company has on its local community,” said Andrews. “Beyond providing well paying jobs in support of the local economy, Norwich also makes special effort to engage in community activities in many ways.”

He said one of the most evident ways the company engages in community activities is with the annual Alvogen Day in September of each year, where the manufacturing facility shuts down and all 300 employees are assigned to downtown maintenance projects. He added that having all of their employees out of the facility at once to help improve the community allows them to increase the impact they have on their community.

“During Alvogen Day, local parks are cleaned, sidewalks are swept, weeds are pulled from parking areas and a host of other beautification projects are undertaken,” said Andrews. “The company is also a strong supporter of the United Way, running an annual campaign with a target in excess of $50,000 for the member agencies.”

He said employees have regularly participated in the Leadership Chenango development program and then gone on to membership on many charitable boards of directors in the county. He added that a few prominent Board memberships include Commerce Chenango and Chenango Memorial Hospital.

According to Andrews, with business success comes investment in facilities and equipment, and special effort is made to source as many goods and services as possible from Central New York businesses.

“Over the past 5 years, capital investment in the facility has exceeded $70 million,” said Andrews. “In a review of suppliers, the company has recognized doing business with 378 individual business entities within 100 miles of its Norwich location.”

He said it’s important for companies to purchase from local businesses, as it keeps the wealth in Chenango County rather than outsourcing to somewhere else.

“We were delighted to be recognized in this fashion by our global business leadership, but more importantly, we are proud of the great work that our employees do in the community and our ability to contribute to the strength of our local economy,” said Andrews. “This award is for everyone at Norwich’s Alvogen and the work they’ve done towards helping to improve their community.”
