OXFORD – The American Legion is turning 100, and the American Legion Post 376 is too, so they're hosting a birthday celebration with a Centennial party for all, on Saturday, March 16, starting at 6 p.m. There will be food, music, and a birthday cake for members and guests to enjoy!
The American Legion organization, as a whole, traces its roots to March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France, in the aftermath of World War I. In that same year, sixteen veterans in Oxford got together, as the original charter members, to form an American Legion post. They chose the name Fort Hill after a nearby historic area in the Village of Oxford, said to have been built by Native Americans of the Tuscarora Nation which was one of the oldest fortifications in the east.
Today, Post 376 in Oxford, Post 189 in Norwich and Post 348 in New Berlin are all celebrated "Centennial Posts".
Post 376 Commander Darlene Ardron invites "Legion Family" members and the community to this casual birthday celebration. There will be fun, music from DJ Dennis and the Five Minute Idols to dance to, an assortment of food served buffet-style, and a special Centennial cake.
Commander Darlene requested, "Please come celebrate the centennial with us and raise a glass to the next 100 years!"
For the past 100 years the American Legion has grown to be the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Post 376 has always committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our community. Fort Hill has been serving an all-you-can-eat Sunday Community Breakfast since 1994 (with all volunteers). The Legion advocates patriotism and honor, promotes strong national security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.
The historic Fort Hill Post #376 is located at 17 S. Washington Avenue. There's parking behind the Post, in the Rt. 12 side parking lot. For inquiries call: (607) 843-8166 or email AmerLegion@stny.rr.com . Visit the Post's website for more happenings and info on membership: OxfordLegion.com . Visit the Chenango County website, ChenangoLegion.org to learn more about the American Legion and a post near you.
