Sophomore helps lead Section IV team to fourth place finish
SYRACUSE – Oxford’s Erin Howard finished up her 2018-2019 season at the New York State Championship on the Section IV Composite team. Howard bowled a total of six games Saturday morning, leading to an overall 24th place finish out of 66 bowlers.
Howard’s performance on the lanes also helped the Section IV team finish fourth overall.
The Blackhawks’ sophomore started the day off with a 234 game and wrapped up the first three games of bowling with a 236. Both of the games were recorded as the sixth best score in each of the games.
Finishing with a series score 1195 and an average of 199.17, Howard rolled over 150 in all three games during the second session. Her final appearance on the lane for the day resulted in a game of 202.
Howard became the first bowler to advance to the New York State Championships in Oxford Academy history. She claimed the Section IV Championship and entered the state qualifier a week later as the fourth ranked individual.
At the qualifying tournament, Howard bowled a solid 596 set and went into the afternoon session seeded in the top spot. She rolled a 604 in the afternoon’s three games to claim her spot in the state championships.
“It was really impressive to see her bowl against the best bowlers in the section and not feel the pressure,” said Oxford’s head coach Lance Thorne. “I’ve had bowlers advance to the qualifier before, but the pressure of bowling against kids from Class A and B schools was too much to overcome. Erin, a sophomore, never felt the pressure. She kept her foot on the gas the entire day and just dominated.
“Our assistant coach Frank Ross deserves a lot of credit as he had Erin make a few adjustments throughout the day that were key in her success. Frank has coached Erin since she was in youth league and knows the little tweaks that need to take place for her to be successful.”
Howard will return for her junior season with hopes of a run to the state championship again.
