OXFORD – St. Joseph's Church in Oxford, the oldest Catholic Church still in use in Chenango County, will celebrate St. Joseph Feast Day and the 170th anniversary of the building of the church on Sunday morning.

The celebration will begin with a Mass of thanksgiving for all of St. Joseph's past priests at 8:45 a.m. A reception celebrating St. Joseph and St. Patrick will follow at 9:45 a.m. in the St. Joseph Parish Center.

St. Joseph Feast Day organizer Cathy Rood said, "The most important parts of our celebration are Mass, where we prepare and bless our St. Joseph table, and the reception afterward where we share what we have with everyone. Even the sick and homebound can receive St. Joseph packets so they can share in our feast."

Every year for Feast Day, St. Joseph's in Oxford blesses a table full of different foods, which are then shared by all in attendance. Local farmers and gardeners have offered fruits of their labor for the celebration, which will be carried as an offering to the St. Joseph table by the church's youth.

After the offering, Rood said prayers will be said and the table will be blessed. All are welcome to join St. Joseph Church for the feast day celebration and share some of the Italian and Irish ethnic foods that have been prepared and donated in thanksgiving to God, St. Joseph, and this year, St. Patrick.

St. Joseph Parish in Oxford formed in 1848 before a church was built under Fr. James F. Hourigan's leadership in 1849. Last year on Feast Day, the church celebrated the 170th anniversary of the founding of its parish with Bishop Robert J. Cunningham in attendance. The church has held a Feast Day celebration for the last 15 years.

Members of the Oxford Historical Society will be in attendance at this Sunday's Feast Day celebration and will be presented a book on St. Joseph's history by church members during the reception.

Rood added, "Since we have had a close association with Catholic Churches in Norwich and Greene, we hope they will join us for our celebration."

St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church is located on the corner of State and Scott Streets in Oxford. Entrances from the parking lot and to the church's basement are located on Scott Street.
