Norwich St. Baldrick's hopes to live up to last year's success on Saturday

NORWICH – The 15th annual Norwich St. Baldrick's will take place at 6 p.m. this Saturday at American Legion Post 189, and event organizers say they are well on their way to breaking this year's goal of raising $30,000 for childhood cancer research.
Since the first event in Norwich in 2005, the local St. Baldrick's has raised $333,562.14 for The St. Baldrick's Foundation––a charity which funds more in childhood cancer research than any organization except the federal government.
Last year's Norwich St. Baldrick's was its most successful to date, with 34 shavees raising $33,570.
"Childhood cancer is so random," said Norwich St. Baldrick's organizer A. Wesley Jones. "It doesn't happen because of lifestyle, it doesn't happen because of occupational issues, it can happen to anybody. So absolutely we're trying to raise funds that will turn around and be given in research grants to places that hopefully will find cures."
Jones said as of Wednesday, 25 shavees have signed up for the Norwich St. Baldrick's and added he expects a handful more will join leading up to Saturday night.
"I'm always impressed with the number of women and young women that come out," said Jones. "Right now we've got 10 female shavees raising a ton of money. I always think of it this way: if women can come out and shave their head and do this, anybody can. So it's always awesome to see."
This is the 10th year that Jones and his son, Tyler, have been with the Norwich St. Baldrick's. During that span, the father and son have raised over $45,000 with Team Tyler for The St. Baldrick's Foundation. The two will be honored as Knight Commanders this year in honor of their 10 years volunteering.
"It's a fun event," said Jones. "People see the cause and what a good organization St. Baldrick's is."
