Thompson Square to headline revived Rock in the Park charity concert
NORWICH – After last summer's event was thought to be the last, the Rock in the Park charity concert will return for at least one more year with a two-day festival at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in June featuring headlining act Thompson Square.
Since the first event in 2012, the Rock in the Park charity concert in Bainbridge has raised over $50,000 for local charities over a day of music in General Clinton Park every summer.
Concert organizer Jason Hall said while the seventh Rock in the Park concert in July 2018 was supposed to be the last, the bands, venue, and stars aligned for the event to continue another year.
"I got [Thompson Square] to come through and it was hard to turn down," said Hall. "We're going to try a weekend. I've always wanted to try a Saturday, Sunday, two-day event.
"Don't get me wrong, I love Bainbridge and the park is great. But number one, they were booked, and number two, I like that Norwich is a bigger area. Obviously we draw people from outside, but that area alone has more people than what we had to draw from.""
The eighth Rock in the Park charity concert will take place this year on Father's Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16. Four acts will perform each day, with national country music recording artists Thompson Square capping the weekend as the final performers on Sunday.
Camping will be available on-site at the fairgrounds, and Hall said the event will be a perfect weekend for families who are looking for a different way to celebrate Father's Day.
In addition to Thompson Square, the two-day concert will feature performances by The Beadle Brothers, The Jason Wicks Band, Sundown, Wreckless Marci, Woodshed Prophets, Project Z, and one band still to be named.
"We're pretty excited about The Beadle Brothers," said Hall. "I talked to them and they haven't played Norwich in quite a long time, so I'm pumped about it. It was tough getting them."
Doors will open at 10 a.m. on June 15 before the music begins at 1 p.m., when the Dairy Day Festival – which will also be taking place at the fairgrounds – finishes up its own musical acts.
Pre-sale tickets can be purchased on TicketMaster for $30 for the weekend, or $20 for a day pass. Tickets can also be purchased at the gate for $35 for the weekend, or $25 for a day pass. A portion of proceeds from this year's concert will benefit The Place in Norwich.
