Marylou Stewart, former Norwich mayor, Chamber director passes away
NORWICH – Longtime resident and former City of Norwich Mayor Marylou Stewart passed away on Wednesday.
Stewart served one term as City of Norwich mayor from 2002 to 2003.
Former City of Norwich Police Chief Joe Angelino said, “I was saddened to hear Marylou Stewart passed. She was such an effective person with her natural leadership skills. I enjoyed working for her when she was the Norwich Mayor and I was Police Chief.”
Before being elected mayor, Stewart was the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director from 1972 to 1995.
Commerce Chenango posted a memorial tribute to Stewart on its Facebook page Thursday, saying “Commerce Chenango, formerly the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce, is very much ‘the house that Marylou built.’”
The post credits Stewart with “[leading] the community in building an effective, responsive and impactful organization, with durable prosperity as its mission.”
On Thursday Assembly-man Clifford Crouch said of Stewart, “As mayor, she was just a very fine lady. She worked hard at her mayor’s job, she always tried to do what was right and what was best for the City of Norwich. It certainly was in her heart all the time.”
In 2015, the Norwich Business Improvement District honored Stewart with its Commitment to Community award. The Norwich High School tennis boosters club presented Marylou with a Lifetime Achievement Award, along with her husband, John, in 2017.
Funeral arrangements for Stewart are pending and have been entrusted to the Wilson Funeral Home. An obituary will be published in the coming days.
