Made in Paint exhibit opens at Golden Artist Colors
NEW BERLIN – The Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts will present its seventh annual Made in Paint exhibit, featuring 28 pieces created by its 2018 Artists in Residence at an opening from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
Every year since 2012, the Artists in Residence program by The Sam & Adele Golden Foundation affords 18 artists from across the globe the opportunity to spend four weeks at a barn beside Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin to experiment with their art using paint made by the company.
"We've gotten to know some amazing people, some amazing artists and then we get to show their work," said Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Program Director Emma Golden. "It's like a big family, the family just keeps growing."
The Made in Paint exhibit will open on April 6 and will be on display at the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (SAGG) through the end of July. Golden said some of the 2019 Artists in Residence will be in attendance, traveling back to New Berlin from places as far as Singapore, Romania, California, and Utah for the gallery opening.
"The residency program invites artists from all over," said Golden. "We've had artists from Israel, Germany, Australia, England, lots of different places. And it's really amazing that all of these artists want to come to little New Berlin."
The gallery is free and open to the public and can be visited after the opening date during Golden Artist Colors' regular hours, from Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In its first year the Artists in Residence program was open to seven artists. Every year since the program has included 18 artists, with the number of applicants increasing with every year. Golden said last year 350 artists from across the globe applied to be in the Artists in Residence program.
The program was created as a way for The Sam & Adele Golden Foundation to support and work with artists from around the world at Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin. Golden said her grandparents, Sam and Adele, would often travel to New York City to meet and work with artists.
Golden said her grandparents had imagined building cabins near Golden Artist Colors for artists to stay in and work on their craft outside of major cities and in scenic New Berlin.
"It was always about gathering people together," said Golden. "And so when both my grandparents passed away, we wanted to create an organization that honored their time in the arts and so we created a foundation.
"That was in 1997 and we were giving grants to artists for many years, and then we focused our sights on our residency program. So it's not little cabins, it's a big red barn, but same idea."
All of the artwork on display will be available for sale with the monies benefitting the artists and The Golden Foundation.
More information about the Made in Paint exhibit and a virtual gallery of the artwork on display can be found on The Sam & Adele Golden Foundation website, www.thesagg.org. The SAGG is located in Golden Artist Colors at 188 Bell Road in New Berlin.
