ONEONTA – A true pitchers’ duel was on display Wednesday afternoon in Oneonta as Norwich took on the Yellowjackets in their season opener. Norwich’s Marcus Cashman and Oneonta’s Teddy McGraw each recorded double digits in the strikeout column but it was McGraw’s team that came away with a 3-2 win due to his walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

With the score tied at 2-2 and just the Yellowjackets’ having their final at-bats of regulation, Oneonta’s Liam Moore reached base. Needing some speed on the base path, pinch runner Seamus Catella came in for Moore and was advanced by Jordan Global’s sacrifice bunt. The next batter was McGraw.

He ripped an RBI single that brought in the winning run. McGraw ended the game going 3-for-4 with a triple.

After trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Norwich’s Justin Bates scored on a passed ball from third. Bates reached the bases after drawing one of four walks the Tornado racked up.

In the bottom half of the inning, McGraw knocked a triple and scored later in the inning to take back the lead.

The Tornado answered right back in the sixth.

Cashman got a good jump from third as JT Vinal made contact, sending the ball to the second baseman and giving his teammate enough time to cross home plate for the second run. Vinal was thrown out on the play but still picked up the RBI.
