Child Advocacy Center fights against childhood abuse
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is once again joining other children's advocacy centers across the nation to spread awareness in local communities with its "Pinwheels for Prevention" program.
According to Child Advocacy Center Community Educator Tracy Henne one of the Child Advocacy Center's main goals is to reduce trauma to child abuse victims and their family members.
"By providing a safe and child friendly environment and utilizing the resources and expert knowledge of the responding agencies we will reduce the trauma to child abuse victims and their family members," said Henne.
In 2016 the center transitioned from being a Catholic Charities run organization to a Broome County Crime Victim Assistance run group, she said.
She added that the Pinwheels for Prevention program is one of the things the Child Advocacy Center does to help bring awareness to the childhood abuse, with blue pinwheels located mostly around Norwich to signify the number of child victims and families they helped in the prior year.
"Pinwheels will be displayed in front of organizations on our multidisciplinary team during the month of April," said Henne. "You will see them in front of law enforcement buildings, social service buildings, and the Child Advocacy Center on Silver street in Norwich."
She said individuals may also see pots of pinwheels in other places such as the Chenango Health Network, The Place and Catholic Charities, to name a few. She added that the CAC works with many other organizations in the county to help children of all ages.
“It’s important that we spread awareness and that we prevent abuse from happening as much as possible,” said Henne. “Every year, approximately three million reports of abuse are filed in the U.S. and an alarming number of the cases reported are sexual abuse. One in 8 children experience childhood sexual abuse before they’re 18 and I think the more prevention and awareness work we do the more we can help improve those statistics.”
She said those who are interested in support the Child Advocacy Center may reach out to its facebook ChenangoCAC, or call them at (607) 334-5437. She added that individuals may also attend the CAC's upcoming fundraiser called, "Stop the 'Cycle' of Violence," a motorcycle ride with a 50/50 drawings, door prizes, and a light lunch.
