OXFORD – The second annual RoboRAVE New York, an international robotics competition held at Oxford Academy High School, drew hundreds of spectators and teams from across the world on Saturday.

Event organizers say 174 students registered to participate in the competition, along with 22 coaches, and anywhere from 200 to 300 spectators. Participants in the robotics competition ranged from age 7 to age 50. Organizers say they had to open the event into a second room and build additional robotics tracks in order to accomodate everyone in attendance.

"We had easily over 300 people in that room," said RoboRAVE New York co-founder and Oxford educator Mark Muller. "We had to build more tracks, it was amazing. It was great. The thing that made me happy was, we had kindergarteners participating, and we had adults participating, and everything in between."

At the first RoboRAVE New York in 2018, 60 participants from across the country participated in the event at Oxford Academy High School. This year, teams from France and Canada traveled to Oxford for the robotics competition and were greeted by Oxford students-turned-ambassadors. Student teams from Egypt and Turkmenistan were also interested in attending, but could not make it due to issues with their visas, Muller said.

Local and regional teams in attendance included Chenango Valley, Downsville, Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton, Greene, Laurens, Milford, Morris, Oxford, and Unadilla Valley.

Steve Palmatier, Workforce and Economic Development Liaison at Commerce Chenango, said, "It's just a tremendous thing for our region. I have to thank all the volunteers, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Department of State and Southern Tier 8 for supporting us financially so that we could grow this thing as we did this year. We had students from schools all around the region."

The competition this weekend featured a number of robotics challenges, including a-MAZE-ing, SumoBot, Fire Fighting, Line Following, Jousting, and Entrepreneurial, as well as a parliamentary debate dubbed RoboEthics.

Oxford eighth grader Aidan Rogers said his team participated in the SumoBot challenge. "It was a great time in general," said Rogers. "We had a lot of good sports there and everyone was nice all the time. You could just practice with anyone, they didn't mind."

Rogers' teammate and fellow Oxford eighth grader, Brooke Huggins said, "We did a lot of changing to our robot and learned quite a bit. We learned a little bit about the programming and what we did wrong and stuff, and we got to see what different teams did to their robot to make it better. Overall it was a lot of fun."

For the RoboEthics debate, two pairs of Oxford High School students were tasked with exploring both sides of the issue of Artificial Intelligence: Job creator, or job destroyer? Bradley Beckwith and Jacob Murrer faced Jud Hendricks and Ashley Rhodes, with Beckwith and Murrer being declared the winners.

"The kids did a really nice job at the debate," said Palmatier. "Most of our students around here, they don't engage in a parliamentary style debate where you have to take both sides of the argument and you have to speak to your opponent's position. So they did really well at that and I'd like to see that expand next year."

Oxford has been home to the first RoboRAVE competitions in New York. Now organizers say that other regions – such as Binghamton and Buffalo – have expressed interest in organizing their own competitions after this week's successful event.
