Trojans’ small-ball scheme leads to win over Storm
B-G can’t hang on to early lead
GREENE – Rebounding from a non-league loss to Owego the night before, Greene’s starting pitcher Nick Shoemaker took to the mound to strike-out 10 Unadilla Valley batters as the Trojans went on to win 5-2 at home Tuesday night.
Greene scored all five of their runs between the second and fourth innings, tacking on two in both the third and fourth.
Getting the scoring started for the home team was Jacob Funnell when he drilled an RBI single to left field with two outs, scoring Trent Rapp from third. Rapp reached the base paths with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice fly ball by Hogan Ludolph and infield ground out by Dallas Roe.
In the bottom of the third, Greene’s Logan Kennedy hit a grounder back to the pitcher and was able to score teammate Owen Howell from third.
Later in the inning, the Trojans had the bases loaded when Roe was hit by a pitch. Shoemaker scored on the play to give Greene the 3-0 lead.
The fourth inning saw Rapp hit a blooper over the second baseman’s head with two outs. As runners were in motion, Howell and Shoemaker were both able to score as the ball dropped in there for a two-RBI single.
Unadilla Valley was able to get on the board later in the game when Cameron Osborne started their small-ball rally with a lead-off single on an infield hit back to the pitcher. With Timmy Postma at the plate, Osborne stole second. Later in the at-bat, Postma send a screaming line drive out to right field, advancing his teammate to third.
With runners at the corners, Shoemaker was able to get a strike out against Gavin Bonzkowski but it was the last batter he faced as Rapp came into pitch.
In his first few pitches of relief, Rapp threw a wild pitch, scoring Osborne from third. After back-to-back walks, Greene got out of the inning with two straight strikeouts by Rapp.
The Storm scored again in the top of the seventh as Osborne crossed home on another wild pitch. He also singled in the inning, giving him two of his three hits in his final at-bats. Osborne ended the day going 3-for-4, scoring both of UV’s runs.
Postma, who recorded his second hit of the game in the seventh as well, went 2-for-4 to give Unadilla Valley two hitters with multiple hits. Bonzkowski also recorded a hit in the loss.
Shoemaker recorded his first win of the season on the mound, allowing just four hits and one run scored to go along with his strike out total. He helped his own cause in the batter’s box as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Kennedy finished the game with two hits in three at-bats with his RBI from the second inning. Rapp also recorded a hit for the Trojans and scored one run with two RBIs while teammate Howell walked twice and crossed home plate twice in the game.
Colin Grant got the start for Unadilla Valley. In his three innings of work, Grant rung up three batters while giving up four hits and two earned runs. Andrew Jackson came on in the fourth for two innings of relief and Osborne finished the game on hill.
Greene (1-2) travels to Delhi on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while the Storm (0-1) host Bainbridge-Guilford on the same day at 4:30 p.m. also.

SIDNEY – The Bobcats took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning but were unable to hold onto it as the host Sidney Warriors scored three in the bottom half. Sidney added another run in the sixth while Bainbridge-Guilford was unable to mount another run in the contest.
The bases loaded in the top of the fourth for the Bobcats due the to two walks and Thomas Palmatier being hit by a pitch. Trent Thorton drew a third walk in the inning against the Warriors pitcher, Nick Gravel, sending Evan Hyzer in for the score.
The scoring threat ended as Sidney was able to get out of the inning following a strike out and a double-play.
Gravel bounced back from the rough outing on the mound in the top half of the inning when he drew a walk of his own. Stealing second two batters later, Gravel was in scoring position when teammate Devon Johnson singled him home with his line drive shot to center field.
Later in the inning, a RBI triple from Peyton Mosher made it 2-1 as Levi Green scored from first following his single. Mike Gravelin finished the scoring rally in the fourth for the host team with a single that scored Mosher.
Sidney added another run in the bottom of the sixth as Johnson scored on a wild pitch. Johnson ended the day 2-for-3 at the plate as the only Warrior batter with multiple hits while the team gathered a total of eight hits.
The Bobcats racked up three hits but drew five walks to get runners on the bases. Thorton, Haiden Burns and Trevor Ross each recorded a hit in the loss. Burns’ hit was a double.
Hyzer pitched all six innings against Sidney. He allowed three earned runs but struck out five batters in his time on the mound.
Gravel threw six innings on the hill for the home team, allowing just the one run. He racked up nine strikeouts and just three hits. Gravelin came on in relief for the seventh to get the save.
Bainbridge-Guilford (2-1) travels to Unadilla Valley for a 4:30 p.m. game on Thursday.
