CHENANGO BRIDGE – The Warriors of Chenango Valley jumped out to an early lead, scoring five in the first inning. As Norwich struggled to make contact in their at-bats, the Tornado were able to only answer with two runs and fell 10-2 for their third straight loss.
“We didn’t hit the ball well,” said head coach Rich Turnbull. “We didn’t make solid contact while at the plate. However, what really killed us is we gave up too many walks.”
The Norwich pitchers surrendered 10 walks to CV batters.
Marcus Cashman, the Tornado’s starting pitcher, couldn’t find a groove according to Turnbull. “By the time [Marcus] settled in, CV jumped out on us,” said Turnbull. “He was having trouble gripping the ball in the cold and couldn’t locate his curveball because of it.”
Cashman tossed 81 pitches in three and a third innings on the mound, striking out five during his time. Tanner Franklin came on in the fourth and finished the game. He picked up one strike out during his relief innings.
Norwich tallied one of their two runs in the first as Franklin scored. He led the game off with a walk. Jordan Jacquette, who batted in the Tornado’s clean up spot, drove him in to score later in the inning with a hit to the third baseman.
JT Vinal advanced Franklin earlier in the inning with a single. Vinal scored Norwich’s second run in the sixth inning when Eli Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. He finished the day going 1-for-1 at the plate with a walk drawn.
Franklin and Keegan Wright were the other two Purple Tornado batters with a hit in the contest.
Norwich (0-3) will look to rebound Thursday on the road in Susquehanna Valley. Game time is at 4:30 p.m.
