Matthews second home run of the season helps Bobcats cruise to win over Panthers
Norwich falls to Warriors; Oxford comes from behind to beat Afton
BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford trailed by three runs after the top half of the first inning as Edmeston was able to get on the scoreboard on a cold, windy night. However, in Bobcats’ fashion, they answered in the second inning with five runs to take the lead and the win over the Panthers by a final score of 11-3.
B-G’s Ashley Matthews hit yet another home run this season – her second of the year – in the contest, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the home team their final tally of 11 runs scored.
Matthews finished with three RBIs on two hits and teammate Bailey Hart also finished with two hits and a RBI in the win. One of Hart’s two hits was an extra base hit where she stopped at second.
Dealing with the elements was B-G’s starting pitcher Alli Miller. As it was a cold night for the game, it took the first inning for her to adjust and settle in.
Putting in four innings of work inside the pitcher’s circle, Miller struck out seven Edmeston batters, but gave up three walks and two hits. Despite allowing three earned runs in the first, the Bobcats’ junior came away with the win.
Coming on in the fifth inning as a relief pitcher was B-G’s Kori Thornton. Thornton didn’t surrender one hit in the her time on the rubber, ringing up five over the final three innings.The Bobcats (4-0, 1-0) head to Unadilla Valley Thursday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Chenango Valley 10, Norwich 0
CHENANGO BRIDGE – The Purple Tornado didn’t find very many hits in Wednesday’s loss to the Chenango Valley Warriors as they fell 10-0. Norwich was able to get four hits against the Warriors’ pitcher in the loss.
Lead-off hitter Parker Walsh and the ninth batter in Norwich’s line up, Triniti Myers, each had two hits in the game. Myers recorded the first hit with a two out single and Parker followed with a single as the next batter.
In the sixth inning, the two repeated the play except Myers led the frame off with the hit.
The Purple Tornado prevented a run from scoring in the bottom half of the first inning as the Warriors were threatening. CV’s lead-off hitter walked after Norwich’s Morgan Conkling pitched a battle to a full-count before picking up the fourth ball of the at-bat.
Norwich’s defense picked up the next three outs in succession, fielding the ground ball hits that all went to the third baseman, Lexi Whaley.
Conkling saw five Warrior batters in the second inning but Norwich’s starting pitcher and her defense were able to hold the home team from scoring.
Chenango Valley’s next trip to the plate was a different story though as they rallied to score six straight runs. The Warriors added one run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Conkling picked up on strike out during her four innings toeing the rubber. Chole Winton came on in the fourth inning to finish the game and also struck one CV batter out.
Norwich (0-2) is on the road again on Thursday as they face Susquehanna Valley at 4:30 p.m.

Oxford 9, Afton 5
OXFORD – Afton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first two and a half innings but Oxford stole the lead late in the game to come back and beat the Crimson Knights 9-5 Tuesday afternoon.
The Blackhawks tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oxford chipped away at Afton’s early advantage by adding a run in the second, third and fourth innings.
The contest remained tied through the fifth inning but the Crimson Knights took the lead back by scoring two in the top of the sixth inning.
Oxford’s offense got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth when Karley Miller led off the inning with a double on a fly ball to centerfield.
Placing the ball in nearly the same place, Lillana Gonzalez followed Miller’s hit with another double, sending her teammate across home plate to cut the Afton lead down to a run.
Gonzalez moved up on the base paths the ball passed by the catcher. Tricia Bohannon then hit a ball back up the middle, scoring Gonzalez from third to tie the game for the second time.
As Bohannon stood on first, the next three Oxford batters then drew walks and she was able to score to take the lead for the home team.
Maddy Howe drilled a line drive single to centerfield, continuing the inning and scoring two more for the Blackhawks.
Allison Beckwith, who drew one of the three walks earlier in the frame, scored on a passed ball to give Oxford their sixth run of the inning, ninth and final run of the contest.
With the Blackhawks batting around the line-up, Miller flied out on her second trip to the plate for the third out of the sixth.
The Blackhawks ended the game in the top of the seventh with Beckwith striking out one and the defense fielding the ground balls for the second and third outs.
Afton tallied their first run with Madison Baciuska crossing the plate on a passed ball. Baciuska started the game with lead-off single.
In the top of the third, Caleigh Hitter Stevens send a deep fly ball to right field and it resulted in a two-run home run as she sent Taylor Schultz in to score on the hit.
Baciuska, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored another run in the top of the sixth inning when teammate Sam Schoelier sent a screaming line drive to centerfield. In the at-bat before Schoelier’s RBI single, Schultz completed a sacrifice bunt and Gove scored from third.
Gove and Stevens also had two hits in the game for the Crimson Knights in the loss.
Beckwith got the start for Oxford inside the pitcher’s circle, throwing a complete-game while surrendering five runs on nine hits and striking out 11.
Olivia Harris-Morris was in the pitcher’s circle for Afton to start the game. She went four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out five. Sophia Gove threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Oxford had ten hits as a team with Miller, Howe and Bohannon each collecting two hits to lead the offense.
Oxford (2-1) hosts Sidney Thursday afternoon while Afton will face Unatego at home the same day. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. starts.
