Greene’s Yahner nearly pitches a perfect game in Trojans win
Matthews homers for 3rd time in Bobcats win over UV; Oxford battles but falls to Sidney
DELHI – Greene’s Payton Yahner, an eighth-grader, made her first varsity start Thursday afternoon. Yahner took a perfect game bid into the fifth inning but Delhi’s Nealis broke up it up a single.
Yahner completed the five-inning game with seven strikeouts and no walks, surrendering just two hits as the Trojans won 17-1 in Delhi.
The youngster who started in the circle for Greene received support from the Trojans’ bats as Mckenzie Scott and McKenna Sergi each home run shots during the game with Scott coming away with two.
Scott ended the game with three RBIs while Sergi finished the game with three hits and two RBIs.
Greene, who is undefeated at 3-0 on the season, takes on Chenango Forks Saturday at 11 a.m.

Sidney 12, Oxford 9
OXFORD – Tied a 6-6 during the top half of the fifth inning, Sidney was able to add two more runs before Oxford was able to close them out and get their chance to respond. The Warriors, however, held off the Blackhawks from scoring in the bottom half of the fifth. Adding another four runs in the sixth, Sidney took the ball game with a final score of 12-9.
Oxford was able to rally for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut their opponent’s lead down to three but didn’t add any more in their last trip to the plate in the seventh.
Sidney came away with 15 hits in the victory, led by Kaitlin Bookout three hits in five at-bats. Teammates Megan Warden, Jordan Lang, Kayla Mcewan and Tiana Saviano each finished the day with two hits.
The big scoring inning for the Warriors came thanks to a lead-off single by Mcewan. Following suit in their trip to the dish were Brileigh Beauchat and Lang. Small-ball and well timed hits along were defensive miscues scored the four runs in the inning as Sidney took the lead midway through.
Unable to answer until the sixth inning, the Blackhawks rallied for three runs and were credited to the offensive firepower of Lilie Horton and Jessie Howe, who each had RBIs in the inning.
Despite the loss, the Blackhawks collected 16 hits in the high-scoring affair. Karly Marshman, Tricia Bohannon, Trinity Vargas, Allison Beckwith, and Karley Miller each collected multiple hits for home team. Marshman went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Oxford at the plate.
“I am proud of the way these girls responded to adversity,” said Blackhawks head coach Ed Holmquist. “We may have lost the game today, but we grew up a lot.”
Beckwith started the game for the Blackhawks. While striking out six Sidney batters, the Warriors were able to come away with their hits. Six of the 12 runs scored while Beckwith was toeing the rubber were unearned.
Amber Rogers was in the circle for Sidney, surrendering nine runs on 16 hits over seven innings. She ended the day with four strikeouts.
Oxford (2-2) hosts Hancock on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m.

Bainbridge-Guilford 11, Unadilla Valley 2
NEW BERLIN –Bainbridge-Guilford score multiple runs in the first three innings of the game and the Storm of Unadilla Valley were unable to come up with an answer big enough to answer as the Bobcats cruised to an 11-2 Thursday.
B-G’s Ashley Matthews knocked her third home run of the season in the top of the third and teammate Alexis Carr joined her in the column with a homer in the first inning as the Bobcats put three runs quickly on the scoreboard.
In the second inning, Bainbridge-Guilford scored four with big hits by Abi Selfridge, Matthews and Hart.
Matthews recorded a triple in the inning, completing two of the tougher legs of the hitter’s cycle early in the contest. She ended up a double shy of hitting the cycle, going 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Storm did come away with two runs in the fourth inning. Meegan White starting the scoring frame for UV with a lead-off double and was able to advance to third on a fielder’s choice.
Her older sister, Kirsten White, sent a shot to centerfield on a 0-1 count and scored Meegan on the RBI triple. Teammate Jenna Hitt drove in Kirsten on a single to the right side of the outfield for the second UV run of the game.
Hitt was later thrown out on the base paths to end the inning.
Morgan Neidig earned the victory in the circle for Bainbridge-Guilford, allowing three hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 13.
Isabella Russo took the loss for Unadilla Valley giving up 14 hits over seven innings. She did ring up four B-G batters in the process.
The Bobcats totaled 14 hits in the game. Along with Matthews, Alli Miller, Selfridge, Neidig, and Hart each collected multiple hits for Bainbridge-Guilford. Bainbridge-Guilford added ten stolen bases during the game. Kori Thorton led the way with two.
Unadilla Valley (0-2) heads to Walton Friday afternoon while Bainbridge-Guilford is off the schedule until Tuesday when they host Delhi. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
