Norwich students in Paris witness fire at Notre Dame

NORWICH – A group of Norwich High School students on a field trip in Paris are safe and were not near the Notre Dame cathedral as its roof was engulfed in flames Monday.

The students were visiting the Eiffel Tower Monday when a fire erupted at Notre Dame cathedral, destroying its spire and roof.

The fire was extinguished Tuesday morning after firefighters battled for 12-hours to control the flames, sparing the cathedral’s two bell towers.

Norwich High School Principal Kisten Giglio, who is on the trip, said in a statement, “Our students are safe; we were not near the cathedral when it occurred. Our hearts are with the people of France.”

A parent of a student on the trip, Brian Doliver, said his daughter had not yet visited Notre Dame cathedral, but that other students on the trip had visited the historic church on Monday morning. The students observed the smoke and flames in the distance from the Eiffel Tower.

“Val and I are relieved that everyone is safe but sad that they had to witness this historic cathedral on fire,” said Doliver Tuesday morning. “We are sure that they will have stories to tell when they return.”

The Norwich High School Facebook page has shared pictures of the students on the trip, including their visit to the Louvre Museum on Sunday. On Monday evening, the page shared a picture of the students in front of the Eiffel Tower.

The caption said, “In honor and respect for the people of France, we are only posting one picture today. While it is a picture of our group with the Eiffel Tower in the background, may it be a reminder to all of everything that makes Paris unique and part of our hearts forever.

“It is our hope that we may all come together in unity and peace as we support the city of Paris and the country of France during this difficult time.”

French President Emmanuel Macron said, “Our thoughts go out to all Catholics and to the French people. Like all of my fellow citizens, I am sad to see this part of us burn tonight.” He has pledged to rebuild the cathedral.
