New Berlin Library to spend $11,000 after recent water damage

NEW BERLIN – The New Berlin's Library recently faced water damage from a leaking radiator and officials say it'll cost around $11,000 to repair the damage and ensure it doesn't happen again.

New Berlin Library Treasurer Donna Wells spoke on the radiator leak at the Village of New Berlin Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 9, where Library Director Michele Priola is a trustee.

"We came in one morning and noticed that one radiator in the circulation room had sprung a small leak," said Wells. "We called a repair company, and they came in and capped it.

"The next morning we came back to a flood."

She said the radiator after the one that had been capped blew, causing damage to irreplaceable books.

"If that happened again in the museum––those items are priceless," said Wells.

She added that with the village's permission, they would like to replace the 10 other radiators in the library that are showing signs of physical stress.

"When the engineer from the insurance company came he pointed out that other radiators throughout the library showed obvious signs of stress," said Wells. "Our fund balance is healthy enough where we can afford to do this, and we will have insurance coverage for both the village and the library."

According to Priola, the New Berlin Library was closed Wednesday, March 20 through Monday, March 25 due to the water damage.

"Water damage was sustained in the juvenile literature room, the museum, and a storage room," said Priola. "We lost some books and will need some repairs but luckily no museum artifacts were damaged."

She said a section of the library was reopened on Monday, March 25, and the museum will be unavailable to the public until repairs are complete and there will be limited use of the juvenile literature room and the children's room. She added that the library hopes to replace other radiators that were showing signs of stress.

"A conservative estimate puts them at 60 years old, they’re old cast iron radiators," said Priola. "We estimate that it'll cost approximately $11,000 to replace the radiators."

She said the library's insurance is currently reviewing the radiator leak, and will make a decision if the initial damages will be covered at a later date.

"We'll make a final decision at the next library board meeting on May 29," said Priola. "After the water damage I had to discard approximately 90 books, and some of those books are totally out of print."

She didn't speak on the library's behalf at the meeting, and she also abstained from the vote citing her position at the library, but all other board members voted yes.

"Any vote pertaining to the library building I will abstain from,” said Priola. "I’m the director of the New Berlin Library, and I can’t wear two hats at the same time."
