Norwich errors costly in 7-6 loss to Seton
BINGHAMTON – Seton Catholic took the lead late in the game for the 7-6 victory over the Purple Tornado due to errors by the Norwich defense that proved to be the difference Thursday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
“Our strength in the games we’ve played well in this season has been our defense,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “It was unreliable for us [Thursday].”
The game went back and forth through out the seven innings of play, which Norwich gained the 5-2 lead in the fourth as a rally through the batting order gave the Tornado four runs. The Saints answered in the fifth with three runs to tie the ballgame at 5-5.
Two costly errors in the sixth inning by the Norwich defense allowed Seton’s go-ahead run to cross home plate, taking the 7-5 lead late in the game.
With the Tornado heading to the plate for their possible last trip to the batter’s box in the top of the seventh, JT Vinal drew full-count walk. After stealing second and putting himself in scoring position, Vinal’s teammate Jordan Jacquette came up with a timely hit, finding the small gap over the third baseman’s head and giving Vinal enough time to get home for the score.
Now trailing by just one run and no outs against them, Norwich needed to continue the rally. However, only one base runner was able to reach first as Justin Bates was hit by a pitch. The last batter for the Tornado struck out, ending the close game in favor of the Saints.
Seton scored the first run of the game to take the early lead. Norwich tied the score in the second as Kegan Wright came across the plate on Thomas Flanagan’s ground ball, resulting in a fielder’s choice RBI for Flanagan.
The Saints scored another run in the third to take the 2-1 before the Tornado’s fourth inning rally to take the three run lead.
Luciano Pasquale got the start for Seton Catholic, lasting five innings. He allowed five runs on five hits and striking out six.
Nate Thorpe was on the pitcher’s mound to start for Norwich. Striking out six in his time on the mound, Thorpe allowed nine hits and five earned runs over six innings.
“[Nate] pitched to contact, which is what we want,” Turnbull said. “We didn’t play well behind him.”
Vinal ended the day going 2-for-3 with a triple in the first inning. Wright finished with a hit and two runs scored. Jacquette drew three walks and had a hit for 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Norwich was scheduled to play Seton again Friday afternoon but the game was be postponed Friday morning due to the rain expected for the day. The game has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 15 at 4:30 p.m.
The Tornado will now play three game in a row starting Monday afternoon at Chenango Forks. They will return to host back-to-back home games against Susquehanna Valley and the Saints. Turnbull will recognize his seniors on Tuesday’s game against the Sabers. All games are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
