Storm brews an extra inning walk-off win over No. 1 Deposit/Hancock

GILBERTSVILLE – For the third straight game, the Unadilla Valley/Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Storm baseball team used extra innings to determine the outcome. Saturday morning gave the Storm squad their second win of the three games, but it was the largest upset of the baseball season as they downed the top team in New York State, the Deposit/Hancock Eagles, 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth.
With the bases loaded for UV/GMU’s Cameron Osborne after three walks drawn by teammates Dalton Proskine, Drew Emrich and Andrew Jackson, Osborne sent the first pitch of his at-bat high in the air to right field. The Eagles’ Raymond Rynearson caught the ball, but with just one out against the Storm, Proskine was able to tag-up to score and take the victory over the No. 1 Class C ranked team.
“This is a big win for our young program,” said Matt Osborne, UV/GMU’s head coach. “We played outstanding defense for nine innings. Our pitching was efficient and we made a play at the end of the game to win it.”
Deposit-Hancock, the defending Class C New York State champion, was undefeated coming into Saturday’s game.
The Eagles struck first in the contest, scoring one run in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back singles by Rynearson and Caden Fortunato put runners on the corners and one in scoring position for Deposit/Hancock early in the inning.
Rynearson, who was waiting on third after a steal and Fortunato’s base knock, scored on the Storm’s attempt to throw out Fortunato stealing second.
UV/GMU answered back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 with Gavin Bonczkowski crossing the plate.
Bonczkowski got the inning started with single to right field. His colleague Colin Grant hit a hard grounder to the Eagles’ shortstop, advancing Bonczkowski to second. Grant was safe at first to give the Storm base runners at first and second.
Andrew Meyers continued the inning for UV/GMU as he laid down what was supposed to be a sacrifice bunt, but an error by Deposit/Hancock’s pitcher sent Bonczkowski into score.
The rest of the game saw no runs scored, sending the game into extra innings.
In both the top of the eighth and ninth innings, the Eagles came away with hits but the runners were left on base as the Storm’s defense finished out the frames, setting up the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.
Osborne finished 2-for-4 and recorded a RBI. Emrich, Bonczkowski and Meyers were the only other hits recorded by the Storm batters.
“I am very proud of this team and their effort,” said Coach Osborne. “We stayed focused and believed that we could compete with the No. 1 ranked team in the state.”
Rynearson started on the hill for the Eagles, lasting seven innings. He allowed five hits and one run while striking out six during his time on the mound. Wyatt Jacobs came in as the relief pitcher once Rynearson hit his maxium pitch count allowed. Jacobs had three strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings.
Colin Grant got the start for UV/G-MU, striking out three while surrendering four hits in eight innings. Osborne pitched the in the top of the ninth and allowed just one hit in the four batters he faced.
Fortunato led the Eagles at the plate with two hits in three trips to the plate. Caleb Walker, Rynearson and Joisah Simmons each had a hit in the contest.
