Storm reach playoffs with big 6-3 win over Walton

UV/GMU falls in regular season finale to Delhi
DELHI – The Storm of Unadilla Valley/Gilbertsville-Mount Upton reached the playoffs Wednesday with a win over the Walton Warriors, reaching the win amount needed with the 6-3 victory. UV/GMU fell behind the Delhi Bulldogs 10-1 early in Friday’s game before losing 10-2.
Due to two bad innings defensively, the host Bulldogs built a big lead and were able to hold off the Storm in the regular season finale.
UV/GMU took the lead early, tacking on the first run of the game in the top of the first because of Kyler Butts.
Butts scored on an error by the Delhi shortstop, coming in from third with the bases were loaded. The Storm batter was hit by a pitch during his lead-off at-bat and moved up the bases with a steal at second.
Teammate Andrew Jackson advanced Butts into scoring position with hard ground ball in the infield. Delhi’s Tyler Bruce threw Jackson out across the diamond as Butts moved to third.
Back-to-back walks were drawn by the Storm’s Cameron Osborne and Timmy Postma to fill the bases but a strikeout ended the offensive half of the frame for the visiting team.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the first with Tyler Bruce leading the inning off with a single. Bruce later crossed the plate on a Alex Taylor ground ball that was hit to Jackson at the shortstop position. Jackson was able to get the second out of the inning with his throw to first and Gavin Bonczkowski picked up the next out to prevent any additional runs for Delhi.
However, the second and third innings is where the Bulldogs did damage. The home team scored three more runs in the second before tacking on another six during the big offensive third. Three hits, two walks and a few fielder’s choice plays by the Storm’s defense gave Delhi the momentum push.
The UV/GMU Storm added one more run in the contest as Jackson scored on Osborne’s ground ball single. Osborne went 2-for-3 in the game and recorded one of two RBIs for his team.
With a fielder’s choice, Bonczkowski picked up the other RBI while teammate Postma went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish with two walks drawn as well.
Sean Carron was the winning pitcher for Delhi, allowing one hit and one run over two innings of work. He struck out one while teammate Luke Branigan threw five innings in relief. Branigan gave up five hits but threw five strikeouts during his time on the mound.
Cameron Osborne took the loss for the Storm. He surrendered three hits over two innings, striking out one and walking one. Grant finished the game, tossing four strikeouts in four innings of relief.
The Bulldogs’ offense saw six different players end the game with a hit while Taylor finished with three RBIs in the win.
The season isn’t over for the Storm through. On Wednesday, UV/GMU defeated Walton 6-3 to qualify for sectional play.
The Storm’s Colin Grant may have only had one strikeout but his time on the hill got the job done as he only allowed three hits and one earned run to pick up the win.
“Colin was again very efficient on the mound for us,” said UV/GMU’s head coach Matt Osborne. “Our defense was solid behind him. Offensively, we had some timely hits and were able to advance runners with a couple of bunts. We played very well [Wednesday].”
Those bunts Osborne is talking came in the fourth inning, which helped the Storm put together a big rally. Unadilla Valley/Gilbertsville-Mount Upton was able to scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning behind three hits.
Drew Emrich was one of those who laid down a bunt in the frame and with an error by Walton, he was able to reach first while sending Cameron Osborne into score.
Jackson’s line drive started the inning off and it was Osborne’s double that send him across the plate for the first of the six runs. UV/GMU batted through the line-up during their big offensive rally.
Nolan Church took the loss for Walton. He lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out four and walking one.
Kyle Wright had a double in one at-bat for the Warriors as one of the four hits by the Warriors. Wright tallied one RBI in the loss along with teammates Cody Merwin and Brendan McCormack.
Cameron Osborne led UV/GMU Storm Varsity with two hits in four at bats. He also finished the game on the hill for the Storm, coming away two strikeouts and the save.
The Storm end the regular season 5-7 overall. They currently await their sectional seed, which will have started earlier this week.
