Norwich American Legion announces Memorial Day plans
NORWICH – Commander Will Griffin of Norwich’s American Legion has announced the Memorial Day events for Monday, May 27, to honor veterans of all wars, POW and MIAs, the victims of the attack on September 11, 2001 World Trade Center, Pentagon, Flight 93 terrorist attacks, and the present-day war on terrorism.
The Memorial Day activities will include a parade, guest speaker, veteran ceremonies and the traditional color guard live fire salute, followed by the playing of taps. In addition, there will be a tribute to the deceased veterans of the past year who were members of the Norwich American Legion Post 189 and/or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2782.
The event will start at 10:15 a.m., participants in the Memorial Day parade will line up at the VFW, located at 61 East Main Street in Norwich.
Organizers said the parade will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and will proceed west on East and West Main Streets, to the West Side Park, where Memorial Services will be conducted in front of the World War II monument.
The West Side Park is located at the center of the City of Norwich, on which the Chenango County Court House is located. Disabled and senior veterans can park in the first seven parking spaces on West Park Place which will be designated as temporary “handicap parking.” Designated seating will also be available for disabled and senior veterans in the West Side Park.
This year’s guest speaker is Wadeanthony Burke, U.S. Army veteran.
Organizers said Burke grew up in Norwich and is remembered for his outstanding athletic skills from a Cyclone to a Purple Tornado, in addition to his musical aptitude.
After graduation from Norwich High School, he attended Hartwick College before enlisting in the U.S Army where he spent the last 6 years as a Combat Medical Specialist, achieving the rank of sergeant (E-5). He attended Medical Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; attended Combat Medic, Ranger School and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia and Special Forces Qualification Course/18C Special Forces Engineer and Demolition school at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
They said Burke served overseas with the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Vicenza, Italy. While stationed in Italy, Burke supported “Operation Atlantic Resolve”, which builds readiness, increases interoperability and enhances the bonds between ally and partner militaries with multinational training events in Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania.
Burke’s achievements include the Army Achievement Medal, Army, Army Good Conduct Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Parachutist Badge.
Parade participants will include the Norwich City Police and Fire Departments, Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Troopers (Troop C), Norwich High School Marching Band, American Legion Post 189 with its Auxiliary Unit, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Riders, VFW Post 2782 and its Auxiliary Unit, the Patriot Guard Riders, the Norwich-based Boy and Girl Scout Troops, Cub Scouts and Brownies, along with disabled and senior veterans. The National Anthem will be sung by the Norwich High School (NHS) Madrigal Chorus and “echo” Taps to be played by trumpeters from the NHS Marching Band.
Following the conclusion of the Memorial Day ceremonies, the honor guards from the American Legion and VFW Posts will conduct military services at the Mount Hope and St. Paul’s cemeteries for veterans buried there.
A floating wreath will be placed in the Canasawacta Creek in memory of those lost at sea. Following the Memorial Services, the American Legion will host a light lunch and refreshments at the Legion Post located at 29 Sheldon Street in Norwich.
Unserviceable American and state flags can be brought to the Legion Post for dignified and respectful disposal which will be held at time to be decided.
