Norwich’s Gage makes cut at Section IV tournament set to play at New York State Championships in June

ITHACA – Alex Gage of the Purple Tornado shot an 85 to miss the day one cut by two strokes through the miserable course conditions at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University on Thursday, May 16.

Returning two days later for the second round, Gage had talked to his head coach Dave Branham prior to the start about what he needed to do in order to make the New York State Championship tournament in his senior year.

“Last year, Alex was in nearly the same spot,” said Branham. “He shot an 88 and 75 for his two rounds, nearly missing the cut for the state tournament. I told him there is no reason he couldn’t do something like that again.

“After watching the field play on the first day, I knew Alex was going to need at least a 75 or better to make the cut and move on. I made him aware of it and he went out knowing what he needed to do.”

Gage shot a 78 for the round, shooting a third-best score for the 18 holes. With the two rounds added together, the Tornado senior had a total of 163 for the tournament.

Once the other groups finished their second round, Gage found himself fighting three other golfers from the the section for one of the final spots.

One of the four golfers made a par on the first playoff hole to secure a spot at the state tournament, leaving two spots between three players for yet another playoff.

Ryan Locke of Chenango Forks was the first two make par on the second playoff green, leaving Gage and Tioga’s Sam Taylor to make their 8-foot and 12-foot putts to force another hole.

Taylor went first for his 12-footer but left it short of the cup, giving Gage a chance to secure his trip to the New York State Championship.

While Gage was setting up his putt and finding his line, Taylor stood behind him and held his hat as he waited for the Norwich golfer to take his shot.

Gage sent the ball straight to the center of the cup, sinking the par and capturing his spot as a Section IV representative at the state tournament.

“[Making the cut] was huge for Alex,” said Branham. “With this being his senior year and his last chance, he has had to overcome some adversity recently and this is exactly what he needed.”

The Purple Tornado senior and his coach will return the Cornell University course on Saturday, June 1 for a practice round. Gage will then play two rounds of 18 holes on Sunday and Monday for his shot at a state crown.
